The\ntypical concern is to ensure that\nproper <em>terumos<\/em> and <em>maasros<\/em> are taken. During <em>Shemita<\/em>, <em>terumos\n<\/em>and <em>maasros<\/em> are not typically applicable<a href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>,\nbut there is significant concern that the produce may be from <em>Shemita<\/em>.\nIf someone purchased Israeli produce from <em>Shemita <\/em>and paid cash (as\nopposed to by check\nor credit card), returning it to the store may also potentially violate the\nprohibition of doing business with <em>Shemita <\/em>produce. If this happens by mistake, a <em>rav<\/em>\nshould be consulted.<a href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">While it can be assumed that all <em>vegetables<\/em> currently on the\nmarket are from the <em>Shemita <\/em>year,not all Israeli <em>fruits<\/em> yet on the market are from\nthe <em>Shemita <\/em>year. <strong>The Halacha is that the <em>Shemita <\/em>status of\nfruits is determined by when they blossomed \u2013 not when they are picked.<\/strong> (Vegetables\nare determined by when they are picked). Therefore, although we are already several\nmonths into <em>Shemita<\/em>,many fruits coming into the market now actually\nblossomed in the sixth year and do not have <em>kedushas shevi\u2019is.<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>Consequently, next year, when <em>Shemita <\/em>is over<em>, <\/em>fruits that\nblossomed during <em>Shemita <\/em>and have <em>kedushas shevi\u2019is <\/em>will remain an\nissue for some time longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flowers<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">While the majority of the flowers in North America do not come from\nIsrael, some do. The question of whether flowers have <em>kedushas shevi\u2019is <\/em>is\na complex issue.
