Recognizing\nthe high demand for popular brand name food imports with a Mehadrin hashgacha<\/em>\nin Israel was the impetus three years ago for opening our STAR-K Israel office.\nWe felt uniquely qualified to begin working with Israel’s largest food\ndistributors due to our reputation of always maintaining a high degree of\nprofessionalism, our food technology expertise, and worldwide presence in the\nglobal marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STAR-K\nwas fortunate in teaming up with Rabbi Ahron Haskel who, with his many years of\nexperience, accepted our offer to become director of STAR-K Israel[1]<\/a>.\nAlong with his keen understanding of the intricacies of the Israeli food market\nand the high regard that both kashrus professionals and food distributors have\nfor Rav Haskel, he was the perfect choice for this newest STAR-K venture.\nDistributors such as Israel Beer Breweries Ltd (IBBL)\/Coca-Cola, Osem\/Nestl\u00e9, Strauss,\nand Tnuva were equally pleased with the new opportunities to import Mehadrin\nproducts for the Israeli public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something to Drink To!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

STAR-K\nhas also been very active in providing the Israeli Mehadrin-seeking public with\na variety of alcoholic beverages. We are now working with three of Israel\u2019s\nnewest distilleries: Milk & Honey Distillery (Tel Aviv); Thinker\u2019s\nDistillery (Yerushalayim), which produces fine vodkas, gins, and bourbon; and Oak\nand Ash Distillery (Beit Shemesh), which produces a line of liquors that\nincludes apple brandy, gin, rum, and vodka, and also brews beer and hard cider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STAR-K’s\nassistance was also a key factor in overseeing Milk and Honey Distillery\u2019s\nfirst-time-ever production of a high-quality whiskey aged in sherry casks\nsporting a Mehadrin hashgacha<\/em>. STAR-K\u2019s policy regarding aging whiskey\nin sherry casks dictates that only new sherry casks may be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rabbi\nHaskel describes the long road facilitating and administrating this\ncertification: \u201cOver the last twenty years I visited over one hundred\ndistilleries in Scotland and Ireland, beginning at a time when most kosher\nconsumers drank whiskey without certification, or without direct knowledge that\na particular spirit was researched by competent kashrus experts and found to be\nfree of any kashrus concerns, such as aging whiskeys in previously used non-kosher\nsherry casks to enhance the taste of their distillate. This practice of course\nraises serious kashrus concerns.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With\nthe direction of Rav Haskel, Milk and Honey, whose entire product line is\nkosher, engaged wineries in Israel, Spain, France, and elsewhere to make a\nspecial production of sherry, wine, and cognac for the sole purpose of being\nable to procure new casks for subsequent distillations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Distilleries to Breakfast Foods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

STAR-K’s\nMehadrin presence in Israel extends as well to the world of breakfast cereals.\nSpecial Mehadrin productions of a number of the most popular American cereals\n(e.g., General Mills\/ Nestl\u00e9\u2019s Honey Nut Cheerios, which is licensed in Israel\nto Osem\/Nestl\u00e9) are made weekly for the Israeli market that are not only pareve\nbut also Pas Yisroel<\/em> and Yoshon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osem\/Nestl\u00e9\u2019s\nBusiness Executive Officer Nahum Seeman explains, \u201cOsem\/Nestl\u00e9 \u2013 founded by\nreligious Jewish people \u2013 has kosher in its DNA. It wants to ensure the\nproducts it sells are genuinely kosher and will do the job 100 percent. Our\nbasic approach is to aim for the maximum level of kosher a product can achieve.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen\nOsem was acquired by Nestl\u00e9, it provided the opportunity to import branded\nNestl\u00e9 products produced in factories in the U.S., Europe and Asia to Israel.\nThe initial process of educating each new factory about kosher requirements and\nsupervision, in addition to reviewing formulas and production processes, is\ncomplicated and a huge investment for Osem and the factory. For a new factory\nit can be a bit intimidating at the start of the process. Our kosher partner\nneeds to know how to communicate with factories so they do not get scared off.\nWe need strong kosher partners who are very professional and confident about\nkeeping the kosher requirements, because this reflects on our reputation,\ntoo.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn\nthe kosher world, you need to find solutions to issues and ways of bridging\ngaps. This requires not only an understanding of the food industry and food\ntechnology, but flexibility, innovative thinking, and new ideas while keeping\nthe kosher requirements. Rabbi Aharon Haskel and his team at STAR-K Israel\nreally helped us improve the kosher stability and kosher opportunities in our\nexisting factories \u2013 and they facilitate the opening of new ones.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another\nkey player on the Israeli import forefront is Tnuva, an Israeli food creation\nand marketing company. It is the largest food producer in Israel. Tnuva works\nwith quite a few suppliers and kosher organizations, but it knows that when it\ncomes to STAR-K, they are aware that their collaboration with us is unique and\npositive. According to Tnuva CEO Iram Graiver, the fact that STAR-K is an international\ncompany with a presence in 102 countries means they have quick access to a host\nof professional mashgichim<\/em> anywhere around the globe whenever needed, thus\nsaving the company a great deal in travel expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally,\nMr. Graiver noted that STAR-K not only certifies plants and products and issues\nkosher certificates, but assists companies in finding suppliers and\nalternatives for the raw materials they need for their productions, and helps\ncompanies to come up with kosher solutions to any challenge that may arise. They\ncredit this much appreciated support to STAR-K\u2019s team of kosher professionals that\ndoes its job so incredibly well. Tnuva is known for its high-quality\nrequirements, just as STAR-K is known for its high standards and exacting policies,\nand STAR-K\u2019s professional team manages to combine all of the above with amazing\nresults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gelatin Revolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another\nsignificant contribution for the Israeli food industry which presented many\nchallenges was the making of kosher gelatin from fish skins for a special Mehadrin\nrun. Rabbi Haskel and his team, with their expertise in the kashrus of complex\ningredients used by food manufacturers, oversaw an especially challenging\nAfrican production of this vital raw material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rabbi\nHaskel explains, \u201cLake Victoria, which is near the countries of Kenya, Uganda,\nand the province of Wanja in Tanzania, contains mostly kosher fish, and many\ncompanies market the fish to kosher fish consumers around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSTAR-K\nwas engaged by Genesis Bio Limited, which decided to launch a special project\nfor the benefit of the Mehadrin public, to take on the task of certification.\nThis was further complicated by restrictions during COVID. One of the special\ntools we built for the project is called the \u2018Entebbe Menorah,\u2019 which performs libun\nchamur<\/em> to kasher the equipment according to the highest kosher standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those\nequipment standards were developed by Rav Heinemann. Furthermore, the Rav\nestablished STAR-K\u2019s fish checking policy that states that each<\/em> fish is\nrequired to be individually inspected for the presence of kosher simanim<\/em>\n(fish scales). This standard is universally applied to all STAR-K-certified\nfish productions, and was meticulously adhered to during the gelatin run. Rabbi\nHaskel continues, \u201cFor five<\/em> consecutive weeks, four<\/em> mashgichim\nsupervised the production of gelatin.\u201d They were inspecting every single fish\nfor simanim<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\nSTAR-K Israel moves ahead to meet the increasing demand by Israeli Mehadrin\nconsumers for food and beverage imports, we anticipate that the growth of\nSTAR-K Israel will continue to flourish and bear new \u2018fruit.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
