{"id":723,"date":"2013-08-15T20:52:34","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T20:52:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/?p=723"},"modified":"2013-08-15T20:52:34","modified_gmt":"2013-08-15T20:52:34","slug":"kashrus-seminar-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/kashrus-kurrents\/kashurs-kurrents-2007\/fall-kashrus-kurrents-2007\/723\/kashrus-seminar-2007\/","title":{"rendered":"Kashrus seminar-2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">With the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492, Poland became the recognized haven for exiles from Western Europe and the cultural\/spiritual center of the Jewish people. \u00a0Prior to the outbreak of World War II, it housed the second largest Jewish community in the world, with nearly 3.5 million Jews.\u00a0 All that changed rapidly following Nazi Germany\u2019s invasion in 1939. A scant 11 percent (369,000) of the Polish Jewish population escaped the death camps.\u00a0 Many fled their native Poland in reaction to anti-Semitic violence or repression under Communism. \u00a0Those who stayed often turned their backs on <em>Yiddishkeit<\/em>. \u00a0Now, Polish Jews are feeling a new sense of tolerance and security in their post-Cold War democracy.\u00a0 An increasing number are returning to their Jewish roots, which in many cases have been discovered only recently.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Mati Kos is the first known religious person in his family in the past 200 years. \u00a0The 35-year-old native of Warsaw had the first publicly held post-World War II <em>bar mitzvah<\/em> in Poland. \u00a0To further discover his Jewish roots, he left his home to attend <em>Yeshiva Ohr Somayach<\/em> in Monsey, New York. \u00a0He then worked as Director of Recruitment for <em>Yeshiva Aish HaTorah<\/em> in Passaic, New Jersey. \u00a0Rabbi Kos recently accepted a pulpit position in Warsaw because he decided it was time to give something back to his community.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Kos was one of 28 attendees present at the intensive annual <em>Kashrus<\/em> Training Seminar, held in Baltimore\u2019s Star-K offices from July 9 through July 12. \u00a0He joined fellow <em>rabbonim<\/em>, <em>kashrus<\/em> administrators, and aspiring <em>smicha<\/em> students considering careers in <em>rabbonus<\/em>, <em>kiruv<\/em>, and <em>kashrus<\/em>, in expanding their hands-on knowledge of <em>kashrus<\/em>. \u00a0Classroom concepts came to life for the diverse group of participants, who had the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a kosher kitchen at a first class luxury hotel in downtown Baltimore.\u00a0 Additional tours of a local slaughterhouse, flavor factory, confectionary, bakery, restaurant, and butcher shop were arranged.\u00a0 Participants also had the chance to check for less obvious thrips and aphids hiding in vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I am going back to Poland, I need as much training as I can get,\u201d admitted Rabbi Kos. \u00a0\u201cI wanted to get it from a big <em>kashrus<\/em> organization with great <em>rabbonim<\/em> so it would be on a higher professional level. \u00a0I needed to learn how to put a system in place from an organization that knows the ins and outs of <em>kashrus<\/em>. \u00a0The Star-K program is geared to small communities, like Warsaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Kos was impressed with the fact that Star-K\u2019s program covers all of the angles. \u00a0\u201cIt teaches <em>kashrus<\/em> at the micro-level, from the <em>kashering<\/em> of the kitchen in your house, to teaching about <em>kashrus<\/em> on the national and international business level,\u201d remarked Rabbi Kos. \u00a0\u201cMy only criticism of the program is that it is too short,\u201d he chuckled. \u00a0\u201cI hope to put into practice what I\u2019ve learned from the seminar and maintain close ties with Star-K, tapping into its vast resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Zvi Goldberg, Star-K Kashrus Administrator, and coordinator of the seminar, attributes the success of this program to a mutual benefit relationship. \u00a0\u201cI believe it is advantageous for both groups, the participants and the Star-K staff\u201d, remarked Rabbi Goldberg. \u00a0\u201cThe participants gain knowledge of the inner workings of <em>kashrus,<\/em> and the staff is energized by the opportunity to teach <em>kashrus<\/em> to a highly motivated group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">With the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492, Poland became the recognized haven for exiles from Western Europe and the cultural\/spiritual center of the Jewish people. \u00a0Prior to the outbreak of World War II, it housed the second largest Jewish community in the world, with nearly 3.5 million Jews.\u00a0 All that changed rapidly following Nazi Germany\u2019s invasion in 1939.
