What do Plano, Texas; Thornhill, Ontario; and Olney, Maryland have in common? \u00a0They are just some of the hometowns of STAR-K\u2019s fifth annual Kashrus<\/em> Training Seminar participants. <\/span><\/p>\n

Held in STAR-K\u2019s corporate office in Baltimore, Maryland, July 28-31, participants included: rabbonim<\/em>, kollel<\/em> fellows, and others serving in klei kodesh. \u00a0<\/em>In the case of Rabbi Chanoch Oppenheim, the seminar served to further prepare him for the kashrus<\/em> challenges he will no doubt face as the new Rav<\/em> of the Charlotte Torah Center in North Carolina. <\/span><\/p>\n

Also in attendance were Rabbi Boruch Hirschfeld, Rav<\/em> of Ahavas Yisroel in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and a Rabbinic Administrator of Cleveland Kosher. \u00a0\u201cThe program was excellent,\u201d said Rabbi Hirschfeld. \u00a0\u201cIt is quite clear that the entire staff is under the stewardship of Rabbi Heinemann. \u00a0They are eminent rabbis in their own right and show tremendous respect for each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Hershel Becker, Rav<\/em> of Young Israel of Kendall, and Rabbinical Board member of Kosher Miami, found the experience invaluable. \u00a0\u201cTo see the extensive, vital operation and how STAR-K is set up and compartmentalized, and the interaction among the staff, was so worthwhile,\u201d said Rabbi Becker. \u00a0\u201cI personally gained a lot in halacha<\/em> and in practical applications from the superb presentations, and I appreciated meeting people I never met, making contacts from all over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to STAR-K kashrus<\/em> administrators\u2019 presentations, Rabbinic Administrator Rabbi Moshe Heinemann presented a shiur<\/em> entitled, \u201cShmitta<\/em> 5768 and Beyond,\u201d and President Dr. Avrom Pollak presented, \u201cA Certifying Agency\u2019s Administrative Issues.\u201d \u00a0Furthermore, Rabbi Mordechai Frankel discussed the shaila<\/em>, \u201cIf a consumer eats non-kosher bearing a hechsher<\/em>, does he have to do teshuva<\/em>?\u201d \u00a0STAR-K produced audio-visual presentations about chicken shechita<\/em> and insect recognition, along with hands-on vegetable checking.\u00a0 Field trips to a slaughterhouse, confectionery, restaurant, bakery, and the kosher kitchen of the Hyatt Regency, as well as an optional eruv<\/em> tour, rounded out the seminar experience. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKashrus<\/em> is all about the halacha<\/em> and its interaction with the metzius<\/em>, practicality, of food production,\u201d sums up Rabbi Zvi Goldberg, STAR-K Kashrus<\/em> Administrator and coordinator of the seminar. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
