Yerushalayim<!--more--><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Anyone who has had the opportunity to visit <em>Yerushalayim<\/em> <em>Ir HaKodesh<\/em>, as I recently did with my family, will tell you that a must see experience is a trip to the Geula neighborhood on Friday, <em>erev<\/em> <em>Shabbos<\/em>.\u00a0 Rechov Malchai Yisroel could very well be dubbed the commercial heart of the <em>Chareidi<\/em> community.\u00a0 The stores pulsate with vibrance, energy and electricity while the streets teem with traffic tie-ups, both on and off the sidewalks.\u00a0 It could be termed a businessman\u2019s dream or nightmare, depending upon one\u2019s ability to handle the sheer masses of consumers.\u00a0 The side streets are a labyrinth of quiet residential apartments, like Rechov Yonah.\u00a0 For six out of seven years, the Stern family <em>mirpeset<\/em> (balcony) looks like any other <em>mirpeset<\/em>, but this year is not like the others.\u00a0 During this year, <em>shnas<\/em> <em>HaShmitta<\/em>, this <em>mirpeset<\/em> undergoes an amazing transformation.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Welcome to the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em> of <em>Hagaon HaRav<\/em> Nissim Karelitz, Bnai Brak \u2013 Jerusalem Branch.\u00a0 In brief, the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em> is the legal entity that the Rabbis have established to serve as the legitimate agent to pick and <em>halachically<\/em> distribute fruit of farmers who are observing <em>shmitta k\u2019hilchasa<\/em>.\u00a0 Farmers cannot engage in normal commercial endeavors such as planting, harvesting and marketing fruit as they normally do.\u00a0 However, the fruit is allowed to be eaten, albeit with strict adherence to the laws of <em>shmitta<\/em>.\u00a0 Furthermore, the land can be maintained so that it will not fall into ruin.\u00a0 Agents of the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em> tell the farmer that they will send their community representatives to pick and distribute the fruit.\u00a0 They will establish fixed costs for the fruit and cover the costs of labor, delivery and distribution.\u00a0 The fruits are not to be sold in a typical commercial manner, not by weight or count.\u00a0 There is a fixed container price list posted on the railing of the <em>mirpeset<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">An American may view the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em> as a random selection of fruits provided by a select group of champion farmers who strictly adhere to the laws of <em>shmitta<\/em>.\u00a0 The <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em> may be the distributor of these fruits, but their beauty and taste are enhanced by their quality, quantity and price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As we know, fruits cannot be sold in a regular commercial setting; hence, the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em> is set up in a home <em>mirpeset<\/em>.\u00a0 Furthermore, the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em> pays the workers a set fee for their efforts in the field.\u00a0 These costs include picking and packing the fruit into sturdy corrugated boxes, shipping the fruit to the Stern home, and maintaining the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em>.\u00a0 Trucks can transport 1,000 cases of fruit per delivery, sometimes as much as four times a day.\u00a0 At times, fixed prices for containers of plums, pears, apples and mangoes may be less than 50% of the market price.\u00a0 According to the <em>minhag Yerushalayim<\/em> and <em>minhag Bnei Brak<\/em>, the custom is to eat produce grown on land and in orchards owned by non-Jews, <em>yivul nochri<\/em>. \u00a0According to <em>minhag Yerushalayim<\/em>, these fruits are not vested with <em>Kedushas Shevi\u2019is<\/em> and do not require special handling.\u00a0 The <em>minhag<\/em> in <em>Bnai Brak<\/em>, which follows the ruling of the <em>Chazon Ish<\/em>, is to consider <em>yivul nochri<\/em> vested with <em>Kedushas Shevi\u2019is<\/em>.\u00a0 According to both customs, fruits purchased from the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em> are vested with <em>Kedushas Shevi\u2019is<\/em> and must be treated with special sanctity.\u00a0 Fruits that are imported from <em>chutz la\u2019aretz<\/em>, outside <em>Eretz Yisroel<\/em>, are regular produce and are not vested with any special sanctity.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">When asked why she and her family have undertaken such an unbelievable task, Mrs. Stern provided the following response.\u00a0 \u201cI was born and raised on Komemiyus and my father, <em>z\u201dl<\/em>, was unbelievably dedicated to the <em>mitzvah<\/em> of <em>shmitta<\/em>.\u00a0 In fact, he was able to convince other farmers to observe <em>shevi\u2019is k\u2019hilchasa<\/em>, and through their adherence to this previous <em>mitzvah<\/em> have become 100% observant <em>Yidden<\/em>.\u00a0 I am following my father\u2019s legacy and that is why I maintain the <em>Otzer Bais Din<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 As previously noted, Mrs. Stern\u2019s son confirmed that there can be up to four deliveries of fruit daily.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Walking by the <em>mirpeset<\/em>, there is a view of hundreds of empty cartons piled high to the sky ready to be sent back to the farm to be refilled.\u00a0 Fruits arrive from various destinations, and at this particular time the major shipments of beautiful and tasty fruits are coming from the Golan.\u00a0 According to Mrs. Stern\u2019s son, \u201cWe get some of the best fruit that you won\u2019t see during the other six years of the cycle, because they are generally exported.\u00a0 This year, the fruits must stay within <em>Eretz Yisroel<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">One must be careful to wait until the fruit rots before disposing of the peels, pits and fruit remains in a special \u201c<em>pach shmitta,<\/em>\u201d a <em>shmitta<\/em> garbage pail.\u00a0 In fact, one may purchase ready-made, fully waxed and lined disposable <em>shmitta<\/em> containers that are sold in packs of six, ready for the garbage in a day and a half.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you really want to see the <em>Otzer<\/em> in action, come back on Thursday,\u201d said Mrs. Stern\u2019s son.\u00a0 You bet we did, and how true it was!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>Part II:\u00a0 The Grapes of Gratitude<\/strong><br \/>\nDateline:\u00a0 Wednesday, 13 <em>Tammuz<\/em><br \/>\nPlace:\u00a0 <em>Bais Chilkiya<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">After we board the EGGED #451, it makes its way down the super highway from <em>Yerushalayim<\/em> to Ashdod.\u00a0 We begin the trek down a dusty side road leading us to a quiet unassuming <em>moshav<\/em> comfortably nestled amidst Rehovot, Ashdod and Yesodot.\u00a0 At the entrance to Bais Chilkiya, a <em>moshav<\/em> that strictly adheres to the laws of <em>shmitta<\/em>, visitors are greeted with an atypical \u201cWELCOME\u201d banner and sign that states, \u201c<em>Shabbos HaAretz, Shabbos L\u2019Hashem<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 It is here that the incredibly special Shachar family treats their guests, usually comprised of school groups, to the Bais Chilkiya experience.\u00a0 This consists of a ride on a camel or mule drawn wagon, a petting farm where one can get up close to the animals, and a water ride as well as a grand tractor tour through the <em>moshav<\/em> led by Mr. Shachar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Mr. Shachar, a highly intelligent and unique tour guide, paints a colorful yet realistic tapestry of life, challenges and pathos of the residents in Bais Chilkiya, especially in a <em>shmitta<\/em> year.\u00a0 Our last stop on the tractor tour was the Bais Chilkiya vineyard.\u00a0 It was here that we had the <em>z\u2019chus<\/em> to meet a real life champion of <em>shmitta<\/em>, who left his \u201c<em>Kerem<\/em>\u201d totally <em>hefker<\/em>, open to all.\u00a0 This was no Larriland Farms (in Baltimore) fruit picking experience!\u00a0 We truly experienced <em>Kedushas shevi\u2019is<\/em> to its fullest.\u00a0 Great care had to be taken when picking the grapes, and we had to make sure to eat all of the good fruit that we picked and save the inedible fruit for the farm animals. \u00a0Making the <em>bracha<\/em> on these grapes was a special experience that is never to be forgotten.\u00a0 Of course, we could not pick the fruit in super abundance; the limit is three meals worth of grapes.\u00a0 Since it is a <em>shmitta<\/em> year, there is no obligation to take <em>terumos<\/em> and <em>ma\u2019asros<\/em>.\u00a0 But, the grapes are vested with <em>Kedushas shevi\u2019is<\/em> and cannot be discarded in a normal manner.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">The owner of the <em>Kerem<\/em> is a truly inspiring individual.\u00a0 His sole means of support is caring for an assortment of elderly gentlemen.\u00a0 Words cannot adequately describe these champions of <em>bitachon<\/em>, faith.\u00a0 <em>Ashreichem Yisroel Mi
