I have a number of questions regarding <em>Birchas Ha&#8217;ilonos<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">When is the optimal time to say this bracha?&nbsp; Does the bracha have to be said during the month of Nisan?&nbsp; <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">What rules apply concerning the location of the person when saying the bracha?&nbsp; How far away can you be from the tree when saying the bracha?&nbsp; Can you be inside a house or other structure?&nbsp; Can you be in a car? &nbsp;Is  it necessary to be at a site where there is more than one tree?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">What limitations are there regarding the type of tree over which this bracha may be recited?&nbsp; Does the tree need to be fruit bearing?&nbsp; How old should the tree be?&nbsp; Can the tree be <em>orlah<\/em> (less than three years old)?&nbsp; Can the bracha be said over blueberries, which are botanically classified as a shrub, or would it be preferable to recite the bracha over botanical trees such as a peach or apple tree?&nbsp; Can the bracha be said over a crabapple tree, which has fruit that is not palatable without first cooking and sweetening it? Can the bracha be said over a cherry blossom tree?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \"> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A: <\/span><\/span>See responses below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \"><em>Birchas Ha&#8217;ilanos<\/em> is recited once a year during springtime when you see a fruit tree that has started to flower.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> Ideally, it should be said on the first tree that you see beginning to flower.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> However, if you did not recite the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>at that time you could say the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>on another occasion.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> Some opinions state that one may recite this <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>only during the month of <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">Nisan<\/span>.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>For this reason, it is customary not to say the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span><\/span><\/span>before the beginning of Nisan.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> However, the halacha follows the opinion that you can also say this <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>during other months.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> Therefore, if you did not recite the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>during the month of <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">Nisan<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">you still have the opportunity to do so. &nbsp;This is especially applicable in those countries where spring does not occur during <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">Nisan<\/span>.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>The bracha may be said at night if you are able to see the flowers well.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> Although there are sources that rule out reciting the bracha on Shabbos,<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> the consensus of the <em>poskim<\/em> is that there are no halachic concerns with regard to reciting this bracha on Shabbos.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;A number of <em>gedolim<\/em> have, in fact, often recited the bracha on Shabbos.<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">You should be close enough to the tree to see the flowers clearly.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> If necessary, you may be inside a house or building when saying the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha<\/span>.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> It is preferable to stand while saying the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha<\/span>, although it is not necessary to do so.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>There are sources which suggest reciting the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>over a field of trees, or at least two trees that are in close proximity.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> However, there is no halachic requirement to do so and one may recite the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>over one tree.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">The <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span><\/span><\/span>is recited only over a fruit bearing tree.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> The <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>should not be said over a tree that is so old that it no longer produces edible fruit.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> There is a discussion among the <em>poskim<\/em> concerning whether or not the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>may be said over a tree which is <em>orlah<\/em>.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> However, if you do not know the age of the tree, and there is merely a concern that the tree might be <em>orlah<\/em>, you may say the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha<\/span><\/span>.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> You may recite the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>over anything that halacha would define as a tree. Presumably, this would be defined as anything to which the halacha of <em>orlah<\/em> applies, and would include blueberries.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a> You may recite the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>over any tree which produces fruit that may be made edible.&nbsp;Therefore, if a crabapple tree produces fruit that would be processed and made into an edible food, the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span>could be recited over such a tree.<a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" name=\"ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a>A cherry blossom tree does not produce cherries and, in fact, does not produce any edible fruit.&nbsp;This should not be confused with a cherry tree, which does produce edible fruit. Therefore, the <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; \">bracha <\/span><\/span>may not be recited over a cherry blossom tree, but may be recited over a cherry tree.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
