The <i>bedika<\/i> should be conducted at the beginning of the night of the 14th of <i>Nissan<\/i>, immediately after <i>tzeis hakochavim<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-029\">1<\/a> If he did not do so, the <i>bedika<\/i> can be done all night. <i>Bedi\u2019eved<\/i>, if he did not perform the <i>bedika<\/i> that night he should do it on the day of the 14th of <i>Nissan<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-028\">2<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If he will not be home on the night of the 14th of <i>Nissan<\/i>, he should appoint another adult to <a id=\"_idIndexMarker000\"><\/a><a id=\"_idIndexMarker001\"><\/a>perform the <i>bedika<\/i> on his behalf.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-027\">3<\/a> If he leaves his house within thirty days of Pesach, and is not planning to return and conduct a <i>bedika<\/i> or have someone else perform a <i>bedika<\/i> for him, then he should do <i>bedikas chometz<\/i> without reciting a <i>bracha<\/i> at night before he leaves.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-026\">4<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If he leaves his house more than thirty days beforehand (i.e., the 14th of <i>Adar<\/i> or earlier) and is not planning to return for Pesach, he does not need to perform <i>bedikas chometz<\/i> and may rely on the <i>bitul<\/i> that he recites on Erev Pesach at the time of <i>chometz <\/i>burning. However, he should remove or sell any known <i>chometz<\/i> in the house. If he plans to return home on Pesach and will not have someone else perform a <i>bedika<\/i> for him, he must perform <i>bedikas chometz<\/i> before he leaves.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-025\">5<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no need to check areas containing <i>chometz<\/i> which will be sold to a non-Jew before Pesach.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-024\">6<\/a> If a person is home on the night of the 14th of <i>Nissan<\/i> but is planning to leave for the duration of Pesach, he may arrange to sell the <i>chometz <\/i>in all the rooms of his house &#8211; except one &#8211; to a non-Jew and check that room to fulfill the mitzvah of <i>bedikas chometz<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-023\">7<\/a> (If it is his custom not to sell <i>chometz gamur<\/i>, then he should make sure that there is no <i>chometz gamur<\/i> in the other rooms). If guests will be staying in the house during Pesach and will be using some of the rooms, those rooms must be checked for <i>chometz<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guests who arrive before the night of the 14th of <i>Nissan<\/i> are obligated to check for <i>chometz<\/i>. If the owner of the house does not want them searching his house, he can perform a <i>bedika<\/i> on the house himself and leave one area for the guests to be <i>bodek<\/i>. People staying at a hotel for Pesach should perform a <i>bedika<\/i> on their room. If they arrive on the day of the 14th of <i>Nissan<\/i>, a <i>bedika<\/i> should be done at that time. A <i>bracha<\/i> is not recited over the <i>bedika<\/i> of a hotel room.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-022\">8<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One should not begin any <i>melacha<\/i> within half an hour before <i>tzeis hakochavim<\/i> on the night of <i>bedikas chometz<\/i>. He should not eat a <i>beitza<\/i> or more of bread, cake or cookies at that time; he may eat other food. He may learn <i>Torah<\/i> but should arrange for a <i>shomer<\/i> or set an alarm to ensure that he stops for <i>bedikas chometz<\/i>. At <i>tzeis hakochavim<\/i>, he should stop whatever he is doing, no longer eat any food, and conduct the <i>bedika<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-021\">9<\/a> He could daven <i>Maariv<\/i> before the <i>bedika<\/i>, although if he always davens at a specific later time he can perform the<i> bedika<\/i> first and daven at that time.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-020\">10<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When performing <i>bedikas chometz<\/i>, one should search his house for any edible crumbs of <i>chometz<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-019\">11<\/a> <i>Mei\u2019ikar hadin<\/i>, it is not necessary to clean one\u2019s house from small soiled particles of <i>chometz <\/i>which will not come into contact with food on Pesach.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-018\">12<\/a> Nevertheless, many are stringent and attempt to rid their house of all <i>chometz<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-017\">13<\/a> It is not necessary to check books and <i>sefarim <\/i>for <i>chometz<\/i>, although those which will be brought to the table on Pesach should be cleaned to ensure that they do not contain crumbs which could fall into one\u2019s food.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-016\">14<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <i>bedika <\/i>should be conducted by the light of a candle with a single wick.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-015\">15<\/a> Some have the custom to turn off the house lights during the <i>bedika<\/i>;<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-014\">16<\/a> others leave them on, using both the house lights and a candle to conduct the search.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-013\">17<\/a> The prevailing custom is for ten pieces of bread to be placed in different areas of the house before the <i>bedika<\/i><a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-012\">18<\/a> (although some do not have this <i>minhag<\/i>).<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-011\">19<\/a> Some people take care that each piece is smaller than a <a id=\"_idIndexMarker002\"><\/a><i>kezayis<\/i>,<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-010\">20<\/a> and it is a good idea to wrap them up in order to ensure that no crumbs are left behind. The person conducting the <i>bedika<\/i> could position the pieces of bread, but it is customary for another member of the household to do so.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-009\">21<\/a> One may use a flashlight to aid in the search.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-008\">22<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the purposes of this article, we will assume that the reader is familiar with the process of <i>bedikas chometz<\/i>. Among other areas, one should remember to check clothing pockets, handbags, strollers, car seats, children\u2019s knapsacks, pet cages, fish tanks, pet and fish food, cars and garages. One should ensure that vacuum bags containing <i>chometz<\/i> are discarded and that garbage cans are cleaned. Areas which were thoroughly cleaned beforehand do not need to be scrutinized at the time of <i>bedikas chometz<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-007\">23<\/a> For example, clothing pockets which were cleaned well and checked beforehand do not need to be rechecked during <i>bedikas chometz<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-006\">24<\/a> However, the person conducting the <i>bedika<\/i> should inquire and verify that all the pockets were, in fact, cleaned.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-005\">25<\/a> One should remove or sell all <i>chometz<\/i> at his workplace. If he owns the workplace, he should perform <i>bedikas<\/i> <i>chometz<\/i>, preferably on the night of the 14th of <i>Nissan<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One is not obligated to move a heavy piece of furniture to check behind it for <i>chometz<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-004\">26<\/a> However, if it is known that <i>chometz <\/i>is present it is customary to remove it if possible.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-003\">27<\/a> One is not obligated to check areas of the house into which <i>chometz<\/i> is never brought. However, those areas do need to be checked if children live in the house and could reach them.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-002\">28<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One should not speak between the <i>bracha<\/i> and the beginning of the <i>bedika<\/i>. During the <i>bedika<\/i>, one should only speak about things related to the search. If one did speak about non-related matters after starting the <i>bedika<\/i> he does not repeat the <i>bracha<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-001\">29<\/a> If he goes to the bathroom during the <i>bedika<\/i>, he may recite <i>Asher Yatzar<\/i>.<a class=\"_idFootnoteLink _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-000\">30<\/a> At the conclusion of the <i>bedika<\/i>, <i>Kol Chamira <\/i>should be recited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"_idFootnotes\">\n<p>The following abbreviations have been used: <i>M.B \u2013 Mishna Berura, S.A. \u2013 Shulchan Aruch, S.H. \u2013 Shaar Ha\u2019Tziyun, O.C. \u2013 Orach Chaim<\/i>. However, the <i>Chayei Odom<\/i> 119:6 states the <i>Chazal<\/i> necessitated checking even for crumbs, due to the concern that one may come to eat them on Pesach. See also <i>M.B<\/i>. 444:15.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-017\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-017-backlink\">13<\/a>&nbsp;The Rosh (<i>Pesachim<\/i> 3:2) writes \u201c<i>Yisroel<\/i> are <i>kedoshim<\/i> and scrub away even the smallest amount of <i>chometz<\/i>&#8220;. <i>S.A<\/i>. 442:6 mentions a custom to scrub the walls, and <i>M.B<\/i>. 442:28 writes that one should not mock this custom by arguing that it is an unnecessary stringency. Rav Elyashiv (<i>Ashrei Ha\u2019Ish<\/i> <i>O.C<\/i>. vol. 3 page 355) writes that cracks and crevices that may contain <i>chometz<\/i> which cannot be cleaned should be splashed with material that will render the <i>chometz<\/i> inedible to even a dog.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-016\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-016-backlink\">14<\/a>&nbsp;The <i>Maaseh Rav<\/i> #178 states that the Gra would check his <i>sefarim<\/i> for <i>chometz<\/i>, and this is also the opinion of the Chazon Ish <i>O.C<\/i>. 116:18. Rav Elyashiv (<i>Ashrei Ha\u2019Ish<\/i> <i>O.C<\/i>. vol. 3 page 355) writes that one is not obligated to check <i>sefarim<\/i>, although one should not place unchecked <i>sefarim<\/i> on the table on Pesach due to the concern that a crumb of <i>chometz<\/i> may fall into one\u2019s food. Rav Moshe Feinstein (<i>Shmaiteta De\u2019Moshe \u2013 Shemuos Moshe<\/i> 433:3) and Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (<i>Halichos Shlomo Pesach<\/i> 5:6) ruled similarly.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-015\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-015-backlink\">15<\/a>&nbsp;<i>S.A<\/i>. and <i>Rama<\/i> 433:1-2.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-014\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-014-backlink\">16<\/a>&nbsp;The <i>sefer Bedikas Chometza U\u2019biyuro<\/i> page 185 footnote 35 writes the this was the custom of the Brisker Rav<i>. Teshuvos Shevet HaLevi<\/i> 1:136 writes that he usually checked by the light of a candle only, but he switched on the house lights if it helped with the <i>bedika<\/i>.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-013\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-013-backlink\">17<\/a>&nbsp;This was the custom of the Steipler Gaon (<i>Orchos Rabeinu<\/i> vol. 2 page 2) and Rav Moshe Feinstein (<i>Shmaiteta De\u2019Moshe \u2013 Shemuos Moshe<\/i> 433:1). Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (<i>Halichos Shlomo Pesach <\/i>page 110) also held that it is not necessary to turn off the house lights during the <i>bedika<\/i>. Similarly, Rav Elyashiv (<i>Ashrei Ha\u2019Ish<\/i> <i>O.C<\/i>. vol. 3 page 361) held that it is unnecessary to turn off electric lights as they enhance the <i>bedika<\/i>, but he added that one should not change from the established custom to use a candle as well. See further <i>Hilchos Chag Be\u2019chag<\/i>, <i>Pesach<\/i> page 79.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-012\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-012-backlink\">18<\/a>&nbsp;<i>Rama<\/i> 432:2 and <i>M.B<\/i>. there and <i>S.H<\/i>. 432:12. According to Rav Elyashiv (<i>Ashrei Ha\u2019Ish<\/i> <i>O.C<\/i>. vol. 3 page 360), nowadays it is <i>halachically<\/i> necessary to put out pieces of bread.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-011\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-011-backlink\">19<\/a>&nbsp;The<i> <\/i>Gra<i> siman<\/i> 442 <i>paskens<\/i> that it is not necessary to put out pieces of bread, and the <i>Chayei Odom<\/i> 119:22 similarly states that one does not need to concern oneself. S.H. 432:11 writes that according to the Taz it is better not to put out pieces of bread, as they may get lost. The Chazon Ish did not put out pieces of bread (<i>Orchos Rabbeinu<\/i> vol. 2 page 2), and neither did Rav Moshe Feinstein (<i>Shmaiteta De\u2019Moshe \u2013 Shemuos Moshe<\/i> 432:2).<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-010\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-010-backlink\">20<\/a>&nbsp;<i>Shaarei Teshuva<\/i>, end of <i>siman<\/i> 432<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-009\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-009-backlink\">21<\/a>&nbsp;The Steipler Gaon would place the pieces of bread himself (<i>Orchos Rabbeinu<\/i> vol. 2 page 2). Rav Elyashiv also did so (<i>Ashrei Ha\u2019Ish<\/i> <i>O.C<\/i>. vol. 3 page 360). However, custom is that other members of the household place the pieces of bread, as indicated by the <i>Rama<\/i> 332:2 who states that the custom is to place the bread in various locations for the <i>bodek<\/i> to find. This also seems clear from the <i>Chok Yaakov<\/i> 332:14.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div id=\"footnote-008\" class=\"_idFootnote\"><a class=\"_idFootnoteAnchor _idGenColorInherit\" href=\"#footnote-008-backlink\">22<\/a>&nbsp;According to Rav Elyashiv (<i>Ashrei Ha\u2019Ish<\/i> vol. 3 page 361) is it permitted to check with a thin flashlight that shines into cracks and crevices well, but one should ideally not change the custom to use a candle unless one is checking an area which is hard to examine with a candle. Nevertheless, Rav Heinemann says that it is customary, if possible, to clean out the <i>chometz<\/i>.
