font-size: small;\"><strong>A:<\/strong><\/span> A male <em>Kohain<\/em> is not allowed to be in a location which would render him <em>tamei<\/em> <em>meis<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> If a <em>Kohain<\/em> completely disregards the <em>halachos<\/em> regarding <em>tumas<\/em> <em>meis<\/em>, he no longer receives the first <em>aliyah<\/em> to the <em>Torah<\/em> and may not <em>duchen<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; A person becomes <em>tamei<\/em> <em>meis<\/em> by touching or moving a <em>meis<\/em> (corpse), by being located directly above or under a <em>meis<\/em>, or by being under the same <em>ohel<\/em> (covered area) as a <em>meis<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref3\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; A <em>Kohain<\/em>&#8216;s wife may enter an <em>ohel<\/em> containing a <em>meis<\/em>, even if she is pregnant.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref4\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><br>\nA <em>meis<\/em> is usually placed in a casket or other container.&nbsp; Even if the container completely encloses the <em>meis<\/em>, a <em>Kohein<\/em> cannot be under the same <em>ohel<\/em> as the container if any of the following conditions are met: (i) There is less than a <em>tefach<\/em> (approximately 10 cm) of airspace between the top of the <em>meis<\/em> and the roof of the container,<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref5\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> (ii) the container is <em>mekabel tumah<\/em>,<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref7\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> or (iii) the <em>meis<\/em> is going to permanently remain in that casket.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref6\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> However, if the container is not <em>mekabel tumah<\/em>, and there is more than a <em>tefach<\/em> of airspace between its roof and the <em>meis<\/em>, and the <em>meis<\/em> is not going to permanently remain there, then the <em>tumah<\/em> will not spread beyond the container.<br>\nMost buildings consist of a number of rooms which are under one common <em>ohel<\/em>.&nbsp; <em>Tumas<\/em> <em>ohel<\/em> will spread from one room to the next if there is an opening of at least one square <em>tefach<\/em> between the rooms.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref8\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; A closed door will prevent <em>tumah<\/em> from spreading from one room to the next, if there is no hole or gap of one square <em>tefach<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref9\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; Although metal hinges generally are <em>mekabel<\/em> <em>tumah<\/em>, door hinges which are made to be attached to a building are not <em>mekabel<\/em> <em>tumah<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref10\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> However, museums generally do not have closed doors between the rooms, so that there is no barrier to stop <em>tumah<\/em> from spreading throughout the building.<br>\nThe <em>halachos<\/em> of <em>tumas<\/em> <em>ohel<\/em> apply if the following parts of a <em>meis<\/em> are present:&nbsp; A <em>kezayis<\/em> (approximately 1 oz) of flesh, even if the flesh has dried out;<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref11\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> a quarter <em>kav<\/em> (a little more than 10 oz) of bones;<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref12\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> the majority of a skeleton;<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref13\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> a complete spinal column with the vertebrae;<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref15\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> a complete skull;<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref14\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> a <em>reviis<\/em> (approximately 3 oz) of blood which was removed after <em>misah<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref16\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; The <em>halachos<\/em> also apply to a <em>Kohain<\/em> who is under the same <em>ohel<\/em> as a limb, whether from a <em>meis<\/em> or severed from a live person, if the limb is complete with bones, tendons and flesh.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref17\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><br>\nThe <em>halachos<\/em> of <em>tumas<\/em> <em>ohel<\/em> apply to any Jewish <em>meis<\/em>, even that of a <em>mummar<\/em> (apostate).<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref18\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; There are different opinions as to whether or not these <em>halachos<\/em> apply to a non-Jewish <em>meis<\/em>.&nbsp; The <em>Rambam<\/em> <em>paskens<\/em> that the <em>halachos<\/em> of <em>tumas<\/em> <em>ohel<\/em> do not apply,<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref19\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> whereas <em>Tosafos<\/em> <em>paskens<\/em> that they do<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref20\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; Although the majority of <em>Rishonim<\/em> concur with the <em>Rambam<\/em>,<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref21\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> the <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> states that it is proper for a <em>Kohain<\/em> to avoid this.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref22\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; The <em>Rema<\/em> and other <em>poskim<\/em> concur that a <em>Kohain<\/em> should be stringent.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref23\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><br>\nIt is quite common for a museum to display parts of a <em>meis<\/em> to which the <em>halachos<\/em> of <em>tumas ohel<\/em> apply.&nbsp; This is especially true regarding museums that cover areas of natural history, anthropology, zoology, Egyptology, or those that have exhibits on the human body.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref24\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; <em>Tumah<\/em> from this item will spread throughout the <em>ohel<\/em>, unless <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all<\/span> of the following are true: (i) The item is fully enclosed in a display case which has no opening the size of a <em>tefach;<\/em> (ii) There is more than a <em>tefach<\/em> between the item and the top of the display case; (iii) No component of the display case is able to be <em>mekabel tumah<\/em>;<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref25\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> and (iv) The museum does not plan to leave the item in the display case permanently.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref26\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> &nbsp;As it is difficult to ensure that all these conditions are met, a <em>Kohain<\/em> should avoid entering a museum which contains any item which could act as a source of <em>tumas meis<\/em>.<br>\nEven if it has been ascertained that a particular museum does not display any such item, there is still the possibility that a <em>Kohain<\/em> may be precluded from entering the museum. This is because many museums have on-site storage and research areas, which contain thousands of items that are not on display and are not in display cases.&nbsp; If any of these items is a source of <em>tumas meis<\/em>, the <em>tumah<\/em> will spread from the storage area to the display area of the museum if they are under the same <em>ohel<\/em> and there is an open door or window between them.&nbsp; Rabbi Heinemann, <em>shlit&#8221;a<\/em>, feels that a curator who has knowledge of all the items in the museum collection can be believed if he states that there are no human remains present.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref27\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp; However, not all curators are knowledgeable regarding all the items in the collection, and the operators at the museum answering the phone are typically not fully knowledgeable of all the items in the collection.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftnref28\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Maryland Science Center does have human body parts on display. On the second floor of the building there is an exhibit entitled \u201cCells: The Universe Inside Us\u201d, in which various body parts such as lungs and bones are displayed, in order to explain the inner workings of the cells in the human body.&nbsp; This was confirmed by Ms. Brenda Lewis, the Director of Exhibits at the Maryland Science Center, who informed me that there are &#8220;actual body parts on display including lungs, a plastinated brain, and a bone displaying the affects of osteoporosis&#8221;.&nbsp; For this reason, a <em>Kohain<\/em> should not visit this museum.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"edn1\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"rtl\"><span style=\"font-family: Miriam; font-size: small;\"><strong>\u05d3\u05e2 \u05e9\u05e8\u05d5\u05d1 \u05d4\u05d7\u05d5\u05de\u05e8 \u05d5\u05de\u05e8\u05d0\u05d4 \u05de\u05e7\u05d5\u05de\u05d5\u05ea \u05dc\u05e7\u05d5\u05d7\u05d9\u05dd \u05de\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 &#8216;\u05de\u05d3\u05e8\u05db\u05d9 \u05d4\u05db\u05d4\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd&#8217;
