{"id":597,"date":"2013-08-15T20:10:15","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T20:10:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/?p=597"},"modified":"2016-05-09T15:58:30","modified_gmt":"2016-05-09T15:58:30","slug":"sharp-awareness-in-the-kitchen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/kashrus-kurrents\/597\/sharp-awareness-in-the-kitchen\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharp Awareness in the Kitchen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Published Spring\u00a02011<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>I. <em>Davar Charif<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On one of my first visits to a food production facility, I cried. Not because I discovered a gross <em>kashrus<\/em> violation, <em>chalilah<\/em>; and not from tears of joy over the privilege to promote the availability of kosher food. My tears flowed because at one end of the enormous fruit and vegetable processing factory, the deafening machinery was slicing and packaging &#8211; onions! Despite a distance of a few hundred feet from the onion production line, my lachrymal glands were working hard to flush out sulfuric acid from my eyes. Only veteran workers were immune to the effects of the intruding irritants permeating the air.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The same property that makes slicing onions so annoying is also responsible for the pungent flavor and aroma, which have endowed them with culinary popularity for millennia. The <em>Chumash<\/em> (<em>B\u2019midbar<\/em> 11:5) enumerates onions as one of the five vegetables the Jews were fond of eating while still enslaved in Egypt.<a id=\"_ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> During the Middle Ages, before the discovery of the New World, onions were among the three main vegetables of European cuisine, along with beans and cabbage.<a id=\"_ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> Today, onion growing and processing is a multi-billion dollar industry. This explains why the large factory I visited had an entire section dedicated to slicing and packaging pre-measured amounts of onion slices for fast-food restaurants.<\/p>\n<p><em>Halacha<\/em> also recognizes the unique pungency of onions and accords them a special status of <em>davar charif<\/em>, literally \u2018a sharp item\u2019. Other common foods with this classification are radishes, garlic, lemons, hot peppers, spicy pickles and very salty foods.<a id=\"_ftnref3\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0These items must be treated with extra caution in a kosher kitchen because, as we will see, they present potential <em>kashrus<\/em> pitfalls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>II. Exception to the Rule<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Generally, the result of a <em>kashrus<\/em> mishap in the kitchen is mitigated when the surface of the offending utensil is clean and the contact was made below the temperature of <em>yad soledos bo<\/em> (at least 120oF). A <em>Rav<\/em> can often advise how to correct the situation with minimal losses. However, when a <em>davar charif<\/em> is involved, the equation changes and the repercussions are more serious. <a id=\"_ftnref4\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For example, if one uses a <em>fleishig<\/em> knife to slice an onion, even if the knife was clean from any prior residue or grease<a id=\"_ftnref5\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>and the onion was cold, the onion will adopt a <em>fleishig<\/em> status. The reason for this atypical stringency is because the confluence of the sharpness of the onion, together with the concentrated pressure from the knife blade (<em>duchka d\u2019sakinah<\/em>), imparts the absorbed meat taste from inside the knife into the onion.<a id=\"_ftnref6\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How much of the onion became \u2018<em>fleishig\u2019<\/em>? The <em>Rema<a id=\"_ftnref7\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/em> rules that due to its sharpness, the entire onion becomes saturated with meat flavor and none of it may be used with dairy. He concedes that, <em>b\u2019dieved<\/em>, if the onion was inadvertently added to a dairy soup, we may assume that the meat taste penetrated only a <em>k\u2019dei netilah<\/em>, approximately one inch around where the cut was made. Therefore, the soup would be permitted if it contains sixty times the volume of that area of the onion.<a id=\"_ftnref8\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The stringencies applied to a <em>davar charif<\/em> entail other <em>halachic<\/em> anomalies. The <em>Talmud<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref9\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> teaches that an absorbed taste inside a utensil becomes stale if it remains dormant for more than 24 hours (<em>eino ben-yomo<\/em>). Subsequently, that taste will no longer prohibit a food that it enters. This is based on the principle of <em>nosein ta\u2019am lifgam<\/em>, that an adverse infusion of taste cannot create a prohibition. For example, if a pot was used to cook meat and more than 24 hours later it was accidently<a id=\"_ftnref10\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> used to cook milk, the milk is permitted. However, this rule is suspended for a <em>davar charif<\/em>.<a id=\"_ftnref11\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> The sharpness of the food rejuvenates any stale taste (whether meat, milk, or non-kosher) embedded in the walls of a utensil, and can have an effect even after 24 hours have elapsed.<a id=\"_ftnref12\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Underscoring this entire matter is the assumption that <em>davar charif <\/em>\u00a0defies yet another standard rule of <em>kashrus<\/em>, known by its acronym <em>nat-bar-nat<\/em>.<a id=\"_ftnref13\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> The <em>Talmud<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref14\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> describes a case where hot meat was served on a plate, rendering the plate <em>fleishig<\/em>. Steaming fish was then served on that same plate. The <em>halacha<\/em> states that the hot fish is only able to extract a minimal amount of meat taste from the plate, and one is still permitted to eat that fish together with cheese or milk.<a id=\"_ftnref15\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> Nevertheless, when a <em>davar charif<\/em> extracts a meat taste from a knife, its sharpness causes the full potency to be absorbed; consequently, it may not be consumed together with a milk product.<\/p>\n<p><strong>III. Further Applications<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A cold taste transfer may occur with any utensil that applies concentrated pressure, not just a knife as in our previous example. \u00a0For instance, if the prongs of a <em>milchig <\/em>fork are inserted into a spicy pickle, the pickle would then be considered dairy and could not be added to a meat sandwich. Food processor or blender blades are also examples of <em>duchka d\u2019sakina<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, <em>davar charif<\/em> is not limited to imparting tastes into food; it can also impart a taste into a utensil. One scenario would be when a mixture of meat and sharp spices is being chopped with a blade. The sharpness of the spices combined with the pressure of the blade will cause the meat taste to become absorbed into the chopper.<a id=\"_ftnref16\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This stringency is also relevant to cutting boards. The <em>Chochmas Odom<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref17\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> discusses cutting a piece of salty herring (a <em>davar charif<\/em>)\u00a0 on a non-kosher plate. He states that the combination of the sharp taste and the pressure from the blade will draw absorbed <em>issur<\/em> out from the plate and impart it into the fish. Similarly, <em>Rav<\/em> Shlomo Kluger<a id=\"_ftnref18\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a> writes that if an onion was cut with a <em>fleishig<\/em> knife on top of a <em>milchig<\/em> plate, both the onion and the knife will absorb a combination of meat and milk tastes, thus rendering them both non-kosher.<a id=\"_ftnref19\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For all the above reasons, it is prudent for a kosher kitchen to maintain a <em>pareve<\/em> knife and cutting board for cutting a <em>davar charif<\/em>, in order to avoid inevitable mix-ups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IV. How <em>Fleishig<\/em> Is It?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If someone eats an onion that became<em> fleishig<\/em> through a cold taste transfer from a knife, is he then required to wait six hours (or whatever his custom is) before consuming dairy? <em>Poskim<\/em> say the answer is no.<a id=\"_ftnref20\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> Although the onion is considered to be <em>fleishig<\/em>, to the extent that it may not be eaten with milk, no waiting time is necessary before eating dairy food.<\/p>\n<p>The reverse situation is a matter of dispute. Some <em>Poskim<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref21\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>do not allow consuming an onion that was cut with a <em>milchig<\/em> knife within six hours of eating meat. Other <em>Poskim<\/em> permit this.<a id=\"_ftnref\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>V. How Far Does It Travel?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To what extent does an absorbed taste travel when transported through the medium of a <em>davar charif<\/em>?\u00a0 Consider a case where an onion was sliced with a <em>fleishig <\/em>knife and then chopped inside a <em>pareve<\/em> food processor.\u00a0 The <em>Magen Avraham<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref23\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> rules that since the onion is a <em>davar charif<\/em> and contains a full absorption of meat taste, it will render the blades of the food processor \u2018<em>fleishig\u2019<\/em>. Taking this further, if these blades were then used to chop a second onion, that onion would also become \u2018<em>fleishig\u2019 <\/em>and may not be eaten with dairy. If a third onion was cut with a <em>milchig<\/em> knife and chopped in the same food processor, the blades have now absorbed <em>basar v\u2019chalav<\/em> and may not be used until they are <em>kashered<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Even HaOzer<\/em> disagrees and holds that <em>b\u2019dieved<\/em>, when the food processor was used for a second onion, we may assume that the meat taste from \u00a0the first onion did not compromise the <em>pareve<\/em> status of the blades.<a id=\"_ftnref24\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a> Contemporary <em>poskim<\/em> follow this leniency when necessary.<a id=\"_ftnref25\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn25\" name=\"_ftnref25\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a> However, <em>Even HaOzer<\/em> himself concedes that ideally the blades should be <em>kashered<\/em> prior to using them for <em>pareve<\/em> items.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IV. Fish and Onions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Based on a statement in the <em>Talmud<\/em>,<a id=\"_ftnref26\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn26\" name=\"_ftnref26\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> widespread practice is to avoid cooking or eating fish together with meat (including fowl) due to concern that this may cause illness. May one add onions that were sliced with a <em>fleishig<\/em> knife to a dish of fish?<\/p>\n<p>This question relates to another issue: May one cook fish in a pot that was previously used to cook meat? Since actual meat is not being combined with the fish (only meat taste expelled from the walls of the pot), there should be no problem provided the pot is clean from any meat residue.<a id=\"_ftnref27\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn27\" name=\"_ftnref27\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a> However, many follow an ancient custom recorded in the <em>Tur<\/em> (13th-14th centuries) to be strict and use a dedicated fish pot. It is reasonable to suggest that one\u2019s conduct regarding the meat pot should determine how to treat a <em>davar charif<\/em> that was cut with a meat knife. Some suggest that even those who are lenient with regard to the pot should be strict with regard to adding a <em>davar charif<\/em>.<a id=\"_ftnref28\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn28\" name=\"_ftnref28\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>V. Are Onions Always Sharp?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All onions are not created equal. There are many varieties, each with its own characteristics.<br \/>\nRed onions are milder; among yellow and white onions, the Vidalia, Spanish, Bermuda, Walla Walla, and White Crystal Wax are less bitter. The degree of pungency is also a product of other factors, such as growing and storage environments.<a id=\"_ftnref29\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn29\" name=\"_ftnref29\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Are they all classified as <em>davar charif<\/em>, or are there some exceptions?<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> does not differentiate between different varieties of onions. Later <em>poskim<\/em> acknowledge scenarios when they are not considered<em> charif<\/em>. <em>Pischei Teshuva<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref30\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn30\" name=\"_ftnref30\"><sup>30<\/sup><\/a> notes that while onions are still small, they are mild and have not yet attained the status of a <em>davar charif<\/em>; therefore, he is lenient if the knife was not a <em>ben-yomo<\/em>.<em> Kaf HaChaim<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref31\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn31\" name=\"_ftnref31\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a>emphasizes that this leniency is limited to onions that are immature, but varieties of onions that are naturally small are certainly considered <em>charif<\/em>.<a id=\"_ftnref32\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn32\" name=\"_ftnref32\"><sup>32<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another factor is that onions and other <em>devarim charifim<\/em> often lose their sharp quality after some processing. \u00a0This fact is readily supported by observing an onion fried in oil, baked into a <em>kugel<\/em>, or cooked in a soup. Homemakers with sensitive eyes know that peeling and chilling an onion before cutting it will also dull its sharpness.<a id=\"_ftnref33\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn33\" name=\"_ftnref33\"><sup>33<\/sup><\/a> Based on the item and the method of cooking, a competent <em>Posek<\/em> can determine at what point a <em>davar charif<\/em> is no longer considered sharp.<a id=\"_ftnref34\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn34\" name=\"_ftnref34\"><sup>34<\/sup> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>A more general leniency to this entire topic is found in the <em>Beis Meir<\/em> (glosses to <em>Y.D.<\/em> 96:3). As mentioned above, a <em>davar charif<\/em> supersedes the usual <em>dinim <\/em>of <em>eino ben-yomo <\/em>and <em>nat-bar-nat<\/em>. The <em>Beis Meir<\/em> proposes that these stringencies are compounded only in the case of a <em>tznon<\/em>, radish, the sharp item mentioned explicitly in the <em>Talmud<\/em>. However, one may be lenient with regard to other seemingly sharp vegetables provided that there is doubt as to whether or not the blade absorbed meat or dairy within the previous 24 hours. Some <em>Poskim<\/em> will utilize this ruling in the event a mistake occurs.<a id=\"_ftnref35\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn35\" name=\"_ftnref35\"><sup>35<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More than separating the meat from the milk, keeping a kosher home requires vigilance for issues that pertain to a <em>davar charif<\/em>. This discussion should encourage us to maintain \u2018sharpness\u2019 in the kitchen, and enable us to properly present the issues to a <em>Posek<\/em> should any problems arise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"Left\"><strong>Overnight Onions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Overnight Onions:<br \/>\n<\/em>\u00a0The <em>Talmud<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref36\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn36\" name=\"_ftnref36\"><sup>36<\/sup><\/a> teaches that one puts himself in a serious danger from <em>ruach ra\u2019ah <\/em>if he eats onions, garlic cloves, or eggs that were left peeled overnight. The danger exists even if they are wrapped in a cloth or enclosed in some other way. To block the <em>ruach ra\u2019ah<\/em>, some of the peel \u2013 even a minute amount &#8211; must remain attached. It is enough to just leave the hairy strands on top of the onion.<a id=\"_ftnref37\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn37\" name=\"_ftnref37\"><sup>37<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Kaf HaChaim<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref38\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn38\" name=\"_ftnref38\"><sup>38<\/sup><\/a> observes that people do not refrain from eating salads or other dishes that contain peeled onions and garlic, even though the salads were left overnight. He suggests that the concern applies only when these items are alone, but not when they are mixed with other ingredients.<a id=\"_ftnref39\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn39\" name=\"_ftnref39\"><sup>39<\/sup><\/a> <em>Divrei Yatziv<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref40\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn40\" name=\"_ftnref40\"><sup>40<\/sup><\/a> says it is sufficient to just sprinkle enough salt to impart a salty taste; likewise, an onion saut\u00e9ed in oil is not a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <em>kashrus<\/em> agencies certify processed foods such as onion\/garlic powder, peeled garlic, pasteurized\/ frozen egg products, and even buckets of hard-boiled eggs. They utilize the ruling of <em>Rav<\/em> Moshe Feinstein <em>zt\u201dl<\/em><a id=\"_ftnref41\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn41\" name=\"_ftnref41\"><sup>41<\/sup><\/a> who held that the danger described by the <em>Talmud<\/em> does not exist when produced in a large scale industrial setting.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"ftn1\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">1.<\/a><em>Chizkuni<\/em> comments that the onions were not eaten raw, rather they were used to add flavor to cooked meat. Indeed, ancient Egyptians treated onions with sanctity; they took oaths while holding an onion, and onions were entombed together with the pharaohs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn2\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\">2.<\/a> www.foodreference.com\/html\/onions-history-of-onions.html<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn3\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn3\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref3\" name=\"_ftn3\">3.<\/a> <em>Shach<\/em> 96:18 includes salt as a <em>davar charif<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn4\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn4\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref4\" name=\"_ftn4\">4.<\/a> The <em>halochos<\/em> of <em>davar charif <\/em>are found primarily in <em>Yoreh De\u2019ah, siman <\/em>96, based on <em>Chullin<\/em> 111b \u2013 112a.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn5\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn5\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref5\" name=\"_ftn5\">5.<\/a> The cases described in this article assume that all blades are clean. When they contain residue or grease, the <em>halacha<\/em> is more strict.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn6\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn6\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref6\" name=\"_ftn6\">6.<\/a> One opinion in <em>Tosafos<\/em> (<em>Chullin <\/em>8b, in the name of <em>Rivan<\/em>) holds that concentrated pressure from a clean knife can create an absorption even into a cold non-<em>davar charif<\/em>. The <em>halacha<\/em> does not follow this view. Nevertheless, <em>Poskim<\/em> record a commendable <em>minhag<\/em> to always use a dedicated <em>pareve<\/em> knife when slicing bread. (<em>Aruch HaShulchan<\/em> 89:16, citing <em>Pri Chadash<\/em>)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn7\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn7\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref7\" name=\"_ftn7\">7.<\/a> <em>Y.D. <\/em>96:1<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn8\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn8\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref8\" name=\"_ftn8\">8.<\/a> Alternatively, if a <em>k\u2019dei netilah<\/em> around the area of the cut was removed prior to the addition of the onion to the dairy soup, the soup is permitted even without <em>shishim. <\/em>(<em>Badei HaShulchan<\/em> 96:32)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn9\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref9\" name=\"_ftn9\">9.<\/a> <em>Avodah Zarah<\/em> 67b<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn10\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn10\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref10\" name=\"_ftn10\">10.<\/a> There is a specific Rabbinic enactment against doing this on purpose. <em>Avodah Zarah<\/em> 76a<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn11\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn11\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref11\" name=\"_ftn11\">11.<\/a> <em>Rema<\/em> <em>Y.D.<\/em> 96:3, <em>Shach <\/em>#3. Also one opinion in the <em>Mechaber<\/em> 96:1. <em>Pischei Teshuva<\/em> 95:4 discusses if this is Biblical or Rabbinical in nature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn12\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn12\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref12\" name=\"_ftn12\">12.<\/a> See <em>Y.D. <\/em>103:6. Even in the absence of <em>duchka d\u2019sakinah<\/em>, this property of <em>davar charif<\/em> still pertains. For example, borsht with high vinegar content is considered sharp. Therefore, if it was cooked in a meat (or milk, or non-kosher) pot, even if the pot was unused for 24 hours, the borsht is <em>fleishig<\/em> based on the principle of rejuvenating taste. See also <em>Badei HaShulchan<\/em> 96:46.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn34\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn34\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref34\" name=\"_ftn34\">34.<\/a> Thus, if an onion that is fried in a non-<em>ben yomo<\/em> <em>fleishig<\/em> pan becomes hot (<em>yad soledos bo<\/em>) before losing its sharpness, the stale meat absorption will be rejuvenated and the onion is now <em>fleishig<\/em>.\u00a0 But if the onion lost its sharpness prior to becoming hot then it can still be deemed <em>pareve<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn35\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn35\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref35\" name=\"_ftn35\">35.<\/a> Albeit, the <em>Darkei Teshuva <\/em>(96:62) cites the <em>Mishmeres Shalom<\/em> who is hesitant to apply the leniency of the <em>Beis Meir<\/em>, except in the exact circumstances that he was discussing, i.e. where an onion was cut with a <em>milchig<\/em> knife that is assumed to be an <em>eino ben-yomo<\/em>. This is opposed to a <em>fleishig<\/em> knife, which is more likely to have been used for hot food.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn36\">\n<p><a id=\"_ftn36\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref36\" name=\"_ftn36\">36.<\/a> <em>Niddah<\/em> 17a. It is prohibited for a person to submit himself to a dangerous situation. See <em>Rambam<\/em>, <em>Hilchos Rotze\u2019ach u\u2019Shmiras HaNefesh<\/em>, chapter 11; <em>Shulchan Aruch Y.D.<\/em> 116. This is similar to the statement of <em>Tosafos<\/em> (<em>Yoma<\/em> 77b), that certain types of <em>ruach ra\u2019ah<\/em> no longer exist in parts of the world.
