for Men&#8217;s Haircuts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kashrus Kurrents Spring 2012<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Q:&nbsp;When my barber works on the area around my ear and temple, what I am allowed to let him do and what should I stop him from doing?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/strong><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>A:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span>The hair on a person\u2019s head generally grows in a semicircle, starting from the top of the ear down to the nape of the neck and up again to the top of the other ear, as well as in an arc from one temple to the other.&nbsp; If a person joins that arc to the semicircle by shaving all the hair below the imaginary line from his temple to the back of his ear, he will be left with a circular shaped head of hair.&nbsp; The <em>Torah<\/em><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> forbids a man<a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> to \u2018round\u2019 the hair on his head.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The <em>meforshim<\/em> explain this to mean that it is forbidden to create a circular head of hair by shaving below the line connecting the temple to the back of the ear, as described above.<a id=\"ftnref3\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; The hair that one is forbidden to shave is called the \u201c<em>pe\u2019os ha\u2019rosh<\/em>\u201d, and is shown as the striped area in the picture below:<a id=\"ftnref4\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/kk-InsightsFromTheInstitute-S12_clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"Image 1\" width=\"153\" height=\"203\"><\/center><br>\nAs some people may have lower or higher hairlines, making it difficult to accurately measure the height of the line connecting the temple to the back of the ear, it is prudent to err on the side of caution.&nbsp; Therefore, the <em>sefer<\/em> <em>Yad Ketana<\/em> encourages a person with a lower hairline not to shave in the area which would be forbidden to one with a higher hairline.<a id=\"ftnref5\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> &nbsp;The <em>Chazon Ish<\/em> is quoted as having said that the area extends from the temple to the hair just above the highest point of the ear, but does not include the hair starting behind the highest point of the ear continuing toward the back of the head.<a id=\"ftnref6\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; The <em>Steipler Gaon<\/em> demonstrated the area in question by drawing the following picture:<a id=\"ftnref7\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/kk-InsightsFromTheInstitute-S12_clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"235\"><\/center><br>\n[The text in the picture, \u05d6\u05d4\u05d5 \u05de\u05d9\u05d5\u05ea\u05e8 , refers to the area behind the ear which is not included in the prohibition].<br>\nIt is forbidden to shave with a razor in the prescribed area.&nbsp; It is also forbidden to cut the hair with scissors, if it will cut the hair very close to the skin like a razor.<a id=\"ftnref8\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; If a person uses scissors, he should leave each blade of hair long enough so that he can grasp it with his fingers.<a id=\"ftnref9\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; Therefore, <em>Rav<\/em> Heinemann, <em>shlit\u201da,<\/em> <em>paskens<\/em> that each blade of hair should be left at least approximately 3 millimeters long.<a id=\"ftnref10\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> &nbsp;The <em>Semag<\/em> is of the opinion that it is forbidden to cut even two hairs of the <em>pe\u2019as ha\u2019rosh<\/em> in a forbidden manner.<a id=\"ftnref11\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; It is also forbidden for a Jew to allow a non-Jew to cut his hair in a forbidden manner.<a id=\"ftnref12\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><br>\nIncluded in this <em>issur<\/em> is the restriction for a man not to shave his sideburns.&nbsp; This applies to the hair in front of the ears, extending down to the cheekbone,<a id=\"ftnref13\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> which is approximately adjacent to the middle of the ear.<a id=\"ftnref14\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> &nbsp;&nbsp;These measurements denote the minimum <em>shiur<\/em> for <em>pe\u2019os ha\u2019rosh<\/em>.&nbsp; However, there is an old and widespread <em>minhag<\/em> in <em>klal Yisroel<\/em> to grow longer <em>pe\u2019os<\/em>.&nbsp; Many people follow this custom and, in general, a person should continue to uphold the traditions of his family and community.<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"ftn2\">\n<p dir=\"rtl\"><span style=\"font-family: Miriam; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftn1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><\/a>1. \u05d5\u05d9\u05e7\u05e8\u05d0 \u05d9\u05d8,\u05db\u05d6&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"rtl\"><span style=\"font-family: Miriam; font-size: small;\"> 2. \u05e9\u05d5&#8221;\u05e2 \u05d9\u05d5&#8221;\u05d3 \u05e1\u05d9&#8217; \u05e7\u05e4\u05d0 \u05e1\u05e2\u05d9&#8217; \u05d5&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"rtl\"><span style=\"font-family: Miriam; font-size: small;\"> 3. \u05e2\u05d9&#8217; \u05d1&#8221;\u05d7 \u05e9\u05dd \u05d1\u05e9\u05dd \u05d4\u05e7\u05e8\u05d1\u05df \u05d0\u05d4\u05e8\u05df&nbsp; &nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"rtl\"><span
