Which materials may and may not be kashered?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>A:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp; A <em>fleishig<\/em> utensil which comes into contact with hot <em>milchig <\/em>food or a <em>milchig<\/em> utensil which comes into contact with hot <em>fleishig <\/em>food needs to be <em>kashered <\/em>before further use.&nbsp; There are a number of methods for <em>kashering<\/em>, dependent upon the manner of contact between the utensil and the food.&nbsp; Perhaps the most common form of <em>kashering<\/em> is <em>hagalah<\/em>, in which the utensil is immersed in boiling water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Metal<\/strong><br>The <em>Torah<\/em> tells us that a vessel may be <em>kashered<\/em> if it is made from one of six metals:&nbsp; gold, silver, copper, iron, tin or lead.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp; There are other metals and alloys which were not in common use at the time of <em>Matan Torah<\/em> that are currently used to make kitchenware, such as aluminum and steel.&nbsp; The <em>Poskim<\/em> state that these materials may be considered comparable to the six metals that the <em>Torah<\/em> mentions, and may be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Earthenware and Ceramic<\/strong><br>The <em>Torah<\/em> tells us that an earthenware vessel may not be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp; The <em>Torah<\/em> is referring to a vessel which has been fired in a kiln.&nbsp; Most <em>Poskim<\/em> allow the <em>kashering<\/em> of a vessel made from earth which has been dried in the sun,<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> although some <em>Poskim<\/em> disagree and are stringent.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp; Ceramic is equivalent to fired earthenware and may not be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp; Corningware is a ceramic material and also may not be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>China and Porcelain China<\/strong><br>China and porcelain china<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> should be considered similar to earthenware, and should not be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stone and Granite<\/strong><br>Stone or granite slabs may be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp; However, granite countertops are often made from granite composite, which consists of crushed granite that is glued together.&nbsp; <em>Rav <\/em>Heinemann, <em>shlit\u201da, paskens <\/em>thatgranite composite may not be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wood and Leather<\/strong><br>Wood may be <em>kashered<\/em> through <em>hagalah,<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> as long as it has no cracks or crevices.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref3\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp;Leather may also be <em>kashered<\/em> through <em>hagalah<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"ftnref1\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Glass<\/strong><br>The <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> <em>paskens<\/em> that glass is not an absorbent material and never needs kashering.&nbsp; It is sufficient to merely wash the glass utensil and clean it.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> &nbsp;Regarding <em>kashering<\/em> for <em>Pesach<\/em> use, the <em>Rema<\/em> says that it is customary for <em>Ashkenazim<\/em> to treat glass similar to earthenware and not to <em>kasher<\/em> it.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp; Many <em>Poskim<\/em> contend that the <em>Rema<\/em> was stringent only regarding <em>Pesach<\/em> use.&nbsp; However, if a utensil needs <em>kashering<\/em> for non-<em>Pesach <\/em>use, we would accept the opinion of the <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> that glass is not absorbent, and agree that it is sufficient to merely wash the utensil.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Some <em>Poskim<\/em> state that this is true only for glass cups and the like, which are not directly placed on a flame, but not for glass pans which are put on the flame.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span> &nbsp;<em>Rav<\/em> Heinemann <em>paskens<\/em> that glass pans which are placed on the flame should not be <em>kashered<\/em>. <span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pyrex and Corelle<\/strong><br><em>Rav<\/em> Moshe Feinstein, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">zt\u201dl<\/span><\/em>, told <em>Rav<\/em> Heinemann that Pyrex is equivalent to glass.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <em>Rav<\/em> Heinemann <em>paskens <\/em>thatCorelle is also equivalent to glass.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> However, one should be aware that the Corelle company also produces stoneware dishes, which maymay not be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Porcelain Enamel coating<\/strong><br>The <em>Chasam Sofer<\/em> states that an enamel coated utensil may not be <em>kashered<\/em> through <em>hagalah<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> &nbsp;The <em>Mishna Berura<\/em> <em>paskens<\/em> that it may not be <em>kashered<\/em> for <em>Pesach<\/em> use,<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp; but mentions that he heard that there is a custom to <em>kasher<\/em> enamel coated metal utensils for non-<em>Pesach<\/em> use, due to the fact that the coating is thin and insignificant.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span>&nbsp; However, it is unclear whether the enamel coating which is currently used has the same properties as that which is mentioned in the <em>Mishna Berura<\/em>.&nbsp; Therefore, <em>Rav<\/em> Heinemann <em>paskens<\/em> in accordance with the <em>Chasam Sofer<\/em>,that enamel coated utensils may not be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plastic and Teflon<\/strong><br>The <em>Poskim<\/em> debate whether or not plastic may be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <em>Rav<\/em> Heinemann asked <em>Rav<\/em> Moshe Feinstein, <em>zt\u201dl<\/em>, who told him that it is unclear as to what extent plastic absorbs; therefore, it should not be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> (In situations where <em>kashering<\/em> is not definitely required it may be possible to rely on the opinion that plastic may be <em>kashered<\/em>; a <em>Rav<\/em> should be consulted).&nbsp; Nevertheless, <em>Rav<\/em> Moshe Feinstein states that Teflon may be <em>kashered<\/em>.<span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"ftnref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"ftnref2\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Presumably, this is because Teflon acts as a non-stick agent, and may be considered non-absorbent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"ftn2\">\n<p dir=\"rtl\"><span style=\"font-family: Miriam; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_ftn1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><\/a>1. \u05d1\u05de\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 \u05dc\u05d0,\u05db\u05d1-\u05db\u05d2<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"rtl\"><span style=\"font-family: Miriam;
