I know that it is customary to tear kriah upon seeing the kosel, but what exactly is the procedure?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>A:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;The <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> <em>paskens<\/em> that when a person sees the cities of Judea he should say,<br>\u05e2\u05e8\u05d9 \u05e7\u05d3\u05e9\u05da \u05d4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05de\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 and tear <em>kriah<\/em>.<a id=\"_ednref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; However, it is not customary to do so, possibly because we do not know exactly where the ancient cities of Judea are located.<a id=\"_ednref2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; The <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> continues that when a person sees the Old City of <em>Yerushalayim<\/em> he should say, \u05e6\u05d9\u05d5\u05df \u05d4\u05d9\u05ea\u05d4 \u05de\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 \u05e9\u05de\u05de\u05d4 , and then tear <em>kriah<\/em> again.<a id=\"_ednref3\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; <em>Rav<\/em> Shlomo Zalman Auerbach <em>zt\u201dl<\/em> writes that even nowadays, one should tear <em>kriah<\/em> upon seeing the Old City.<a id=\"_ednref4\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; However, <em>Rav<\/em> Moshe Feinstein <em>zt\u201dl<\/em> writes that this <em>halacha<\/em> applied only when the city was under non-Jewish control.<a id=\"_ednref5\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; The <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> continues that a person who sees the site of the <em>Beis Hamikdash<\/em> should say<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea \u05e7\u05b8\u05d3\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d5\u05b0\u05ea\u05b4\u05e4\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d4\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc\u05da\u05b8 \u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d0\u05b2\u05d1\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c2\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05e4\u05b7\u05ea \u05d0\u05b5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d5\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05dc \u05de\u05b7\u05d7\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05d3\u05b5\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and then <em>kriah<\/em>.<a id=\"_ednref6\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\"><sup>6<\/sup> <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A person can tear <em>kriah<\/em> when he sees the Dome of the Rock, which is located on the site of the <em>Beis Hamikdash<\/em>,<a id=\"_ednref7\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> or upon seeing the Western wall,<a id=\"_ednref8\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> whichever is seen first.&nbsp; Women are also obligated to tear <em>kriah<\/em>.<a id=\"_ednref33\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; Some <em>Poskim<\/em> state that children under <em>bar mitzva<\/em> or<em> bas mitzvah <\/em>do not need to tear <em>kriah<\/em>.<a id=\"_ednref10\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; A blind person does not need to tear <em>kriah.<\/em><a id=\"_ednref11\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> &nbsp;A person who has seen the site of the<em> Mikdash<\/em> within thirty days does not tear <em>kriah<\/em> a second time.<a id=\"_ednref12\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> &nbsp;It is custom that people who live in <em>Yerushalayim<\/em> do not tear <em>kriah<\/em>, even if they have not seen the site of the <em>Mikdash<\/em> for more than thirty days.<a id=\"_ednref13\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\"><sup><sup>13<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A person who tears <em>kriah<\/em> does not need to tear his undershirt or <em>tzitzis<\/em>, but should tear the clothing that he is wearing above that.<a id=\"_ednref14\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; Some <em>Poskim<\/em> state that the custom is to tear only one piece of clothing,<a id=\"_ednref15\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn15\" name=\"_ednref15\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> but the <em>Shulchan Aruch <\/em>writes that a person should tear all the layers of clothing that cover his heart.<a id=\"_ednref16\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn16\" name=\"_ednref16\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; One can remove his jacket before seeing the <em>kosel<\/em>, tear <em>kriah<\/em> on his shirt upon seeing the <em>kosel<\/em>, and then put his jacket back on without the need to tear <em>kriah<\/em> on it.<a id=\"_ednref17\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn17\" name=\"_ednref17\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; The <em>kriah<\/em> can be started with a knife or razor, but a person must tear one <em>tefach<\/em> (approximately four inches) by hand.<a id=\"_ednref18\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn18&quot;\" name=\"_ednref18\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; The <em>kriah<\/em> should be performed on the left side of the garment,<a id=\"_ednref19\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn19\" name=\"_ednref19\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> and should be done standing.<a id=\"_ednref20\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn20\" name=\"_ednref20\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; A person who is performing <em>kriah<\/em> on a shirt should begin tearing <em>kriah<\/em> above the top buttonhole (or top button on a woman\u2019s shirt), where the collar meets the shirt.<a id=\"_ednref21\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn21\" name=\"_ednref21\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; A person who is tearing a jacket can do so anywhere on the lapel.<a id=\"_ednref22\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn22\" name=\"_ednref22\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; A person may specifically wear an old shirt on which to tear <em>kriah<\/em>, and he can tear <em>kriah<\/em> multiple times on the same shirt, as long as there is a space of at least three fingerbreadths between each <em>kriah<\/em>.<a id=\"_ednref23\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn23\" name=\"_ednref23\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; After tearing<em> kriah<\/em>, one may pin the tear back up.<a id=\"_ednref24\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn24\" name=\"_ednref24\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a><br>One does not tear <em>kriah<\/em> on <em>Shabbos<\/em> or <em>Yom Tov<\/em>, and a person who sees the site of the <em>Mikdash<\/em> on <em>Shabbos<\/em> or <em>Yom Tov<\/em> does not tear <em>kriah<\/em> when he sees it again afterwards within thirty days.<a id=\"_ednref25\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn25\" name=\"_ednref25\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a> &nbsp;It is customary not to tear <em>kriah<\/em> during <em>Chol Hamoed<\/em>,<a id=\"_ednref26\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn26\" name=\"_ednref26\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> but one should tear <em>kriah<\/em> when going to the <em>kosel<\/em> on <em>Rosh Chodesh <\/em>or<em> Chanukah<\/em>.<a id=\"_ednref27\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn27\" name=\"_ednref27\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; Some <em>Poskim<\/em> write that it is customary not to tear <em>kriah<\/em> when going to the <em>kosel<\/em> on Friday after<em> chatzos<\/em> (mid-day);<a id=\"_ednref28\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn28\" name=\"_ednref28\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a> however, others write that there is no reason for this,<a id=\"_ednref29\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn29\" name=\"_ednref29\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a> and <em>Rav<\/em> Moshe Feinstein<a id=\"_ednref30\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn30\" name=\"_ednref30\"><sup>30<\/sup><\/a> and <em>Rav<\/em> Elyashiv <em>zt\u201dl<\/em> <em>pasken<\/em> that one should tear <em>kriah<\/em> at that time.<a id=\"_ednref31\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn31\" name=\"_ednref31\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a><br>When tearing <em>kriah<\/em>, one should mourn the destruction of the <em>Beis Hamikdash<\/em>.<a id=\"_ednref32\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn32\" name=\"_ednref32\"><sup>32<\/sup><\/a> &nbsp;It is commendable to recite the <em>perek<\/em> of <em>Mizmor L\u2019Asaf<\/em> in <em>Sefer Tehillim<\/em> <em>(perek<\/em> 79) at that time and say \u05d1\u05e8\u05d5\u05da \u05d3\u05d9\u05df \u05d4\u05d0\u05de\u05ea (without the name of<em> Hashem<\/em>) when tearing <em>kriah<\/em>, followed by:<a id=\"_ednref33\" title=\"\" href=\"#_edn33\" name=\"_ednref33\"><sup>33<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>\u05db\u05d9 \u05db\u05dc \u05de\u05e9\u05e4\u05d8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05e6\u05d3\u05e7 \u05d5\u05d0\u05de\u05ea \u05d4\u05e6\u05d5\u05e8 \u05ea\u05de\u05d9\u05dd \u05e4\u05e2\u05dc\u05d5 \u05db\u05d9 \u05db\u05dc \u05d3\u05e8\u05db\u05d9\u05d5 \u05de\u05e9\u05e4\u05d8 \u05e7\u05dc \u05d0\u05de\u05d5\u05e0\u05d4 \u05d5\u05d0\u05d9\u05df \u05e2\u05d5\u05dc \u05e6\u05d3\u05d9\u05e7 \u05d5\u05d9\u05e9\u05e8 \u05d4\u05d5\u05d0 \u05d5\u05d0\u05ea\u05d4 \u05e6\u05d3\u05d9\u05e7 \u05e2\u05dc \u05db\u05dc \u05d4\u05d1\u05d0 \u05e2\u05dc\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5 \u05db\u05d9 \u05d0\u05de\u05ea \u05e2\u05e9\u05d9\u05ea \u05d5\u05d0\u05e0\u05d7\u05e0\u05d5 \u05d4\u05e8\u05e9\u05e2\u05e0\u05d5<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<div id=\"edn2\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Miriam; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_edn1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">1<\/a>.\u05e9\u05d5&#8221;\u05e2 \u05d0\u05d5&#8221;\u05d7 \u05e1\u05d9&#8217; \u05ea\u05e7\u05e1\u05d0 \u05e1\u05e2\u05d9&#8217; \u05d0&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Miriam; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_edn2\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ednref2\" name=\"_edn2\">2<\/a>.\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 \u05d0\u05e8\u05e5 \u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d0\u05dc \u05dc\u05d4\u05d2\u05e8\u05d9&#8221;\u05de \u05d8\u05d5\u05e7\u05e6\u05d9\u05e0\u05e1\u05e7\u05d9 \u05e1\u05d9&#8217; \u05d1&nbsp; &nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Miriam; font-size: small;\"><a id=\"_edn4\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ednref4\" name=\"_edn4\">4<\/a>. \u05e9\u05d5&#8221;\u05ea \u05de\u05e0\u05d7\u05ea \u05e9\u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05d7&#8221;\u05d0 \u05e1\u05d5\u05e3 \u05e1\u05d9&#8217;
