Q: I am going to Israel and will be visiting the kosel (Western Wall). I know that it is customary to tear kriah upon seeing the kosel, but what exactly is the procedure?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A:<\/strong> <\/span> The Shulchan Aruch<\/em> paskens<\/em> that when a person sees the cities of Judea he should say,
\u05e2\u05e8\u05d9 \u05e7\u05d3\u05e9\u05da \u05d4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05de\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 and tear kriah<\/em>.1<\/sup><\/a>  However, it is not customary to do so, possibly because we do not know exactly where the ancient cities of Judea are located.2<\/sup><\/a>  The Shulchan Aruch<\/em> continues that when a person sees the Old City of Yerushalayim<\/em> he should say, \u05e6\u05d9\u05d5\u05df \u05d4\u05d9\u05ea\u05d4 \u05de\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 \u05e9\u05de\u05de\u05d4 , and then tear kriah<\/em> again.3<\/sup><\/a>  Rav<\/em> Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt\u201dl<\/em> writes that even nowadays, one should tear kriah<\/em> upon seeing the Old City.4<\/sup><\/a>  However, Rav<\/em> Moshe Feinstein zt\u201dl<\/em> writes that this halacha<\/em> applied only when the city was under non-Jewish control.5<\/sup><\/a>  The Shulchan Aruch<\/em> continues that a person who sees the site of the Beis Hamikdash<\/em> should say<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and then kriah<\/em>.6<\/sup> <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person can tear kriah<\/em> when he sees the Dome of the Rock, which is located on the site of the Beis Hamikdash<\/em>,7<\/sup><\/a> or upon seeing the Western wall,8<\/sup><\/a> whichever is seen first.  Women are also obligated to tear kriah<\/em>.9<\/sup><\/a>  Some Poskim<\/em> state that children under bar mitzva<\/em> or bas mitzvah <\/em>do not need to tear kriah<\/em>.10<\/sup><\/a>  A blind person does not need to tear kriah.<\/em>11<\/sup><\/a>  A person who has seen the site of the Mikdash<\/em> within thirty days does not tear kriah<\/em> a second time.12<\/sup><\/a>  It is custom that people who live in Yerushalayim<\/em> do not tear kriah<\/em>, even if they have not seen the site of the Mikdash<\/em> for more than thirty days.13<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person who tears kriah<\/em> does not need to tear his undershirt or tzitzis<\/em>, but should tear the clothing that he is wearing above that.14<\/sup><\/a>  Some Poskim<\/em> state that the custom is to tear only one piece of clothing,15<\/sup><\/a> but the Shulchan Aruch <\/em>writes that a person should tear all the layers of clothing that cover his heart.16<\/sup><\/a>  One can remove his jacket before seeing the kosel<\/em>, tear kriah<\/em> on his shirt upon seeing the kosel<\/em>, and then put his jacket back on without the need to tear kriah<\/em> on it.17<\/sup><\/a>  The kriah<\/em> can be started with a knife or razor, but a person must tear one tefach<\/em> (approximately four inches) by hand.18<\/sup><\/a>  The kriah<\/em> should be performed on the left side of the garment,19<\/sup><\/a> and should be done standing.20<\/sup><\/a>  A person who is performing kriah<\/em> on a shirt should begin tearing kriah<\/em> above the top buttonhole (or top button on a woman\u2019s shirt), where the collar meets the shirt.21<\/sup><\/a>  A person who is tearing a jacket can do so anywhere on the lapel.22<\/sup><\/a>  A person may specifically wear an old shirt on which to tear kriah<\/em>, and he can tear kriah<\/em> multiple times on the same shirt, as long as there is a space of at least three fingerbreadths between each kriah<\/em>.23<\/sup><\/a>  After tearing kriah<\/em>, one may pin the tear back up.24<\/sup><\/a>
One does not tear kriah<\/em> on Shabbos<\/em> or Yom Tov<\/em>, and a person who sees the site of the Mikdash<\/em> on Shabbos<\/em> or Yom Tov<\/em> does not tear kriah<\/em> when he sees it again afterwards within thirty days.25<\/sup><\/a>  It is customary not to tear kriah<\/em> during Chol Hamoed<\/em>,26<\/sup><\/a> but one should tear kriah<\/em> when going to the kosel<\/em> on Rosh Chodesh <\/em>or Chanukah<\/em>.27<\/sup><\/a>  Some Poskim<\/em> write that it is customary not to tear kriah<\/em> when going to the kosel<\/em> on Friday after chatzos<\/em> (mid-day);28<\/sup><\/a> however, others write that there is no reason for this,29<\/sup><\/a> and Rav<\/em> Moshe Feinstein30<\/sup><\/a> and Rav<\/em> Elyashiv zt\u201dl<\/em> pasken<\/em> that one should tear kriah<\/em> at that time.31<\/sup><\/a>
When tearing kriah<\/em>, one should mourn the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash<\/em>.32<\/sup><\/a>  It is commendable to recite the perek<\/em> of Mizmor L\u2019Asaf<\/em> in Sefer Tehillim<\/em> (perek<\/em> 79) at that time and say \u05d1\u05e8\u05d5\u05da \u05d3\u05d9\u05df \u05d4\u05d0\u05de\u05ea (without the name of Hashem<\/em>) when tearing kriah<\/em>, followed by:33<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
