font-size: small;\"><b> <i>Rabbi Tzvi Rosen, Star-K Kashrus Administrator; Editor, Kashrus Kurrents <\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Star-K Hotline is constantly abuzz with\u00a0 <em>kashrus <\/em>\u00a0inquiries.\u00a0 Over 13,100 consumer calls were logged during the week before\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Pesach <\/em>\u00a05772. \u00a0Questions ranged from product information to complex kitchen\u00a0 <em>shailos <\/em>, from reliable kosher airline caterers to wines whose kosher certification symbols are so small you need a high powered magnifying glass to read the\u00a0 <em>rav hamachshir <\/em>\u2019s name.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em id=\"__mceDel\">Even with all the available information, consumers still\u00a0 get confused\u00a0 or make forgone conclusions that could result in incorrect assumptions with incorrect\u00a0 <em>halachic <\/em>\u00a0consequences. \u00a0The following examples of kosher consumer misconceptions are based on real Kosher Hotline inquiries.\u00a0 Hopefully, this article will help clarify some common errors. <\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Misconception 1 &#8211; Putting an oven into Sabbath Mode allows one to cook on <em>Shabbos <\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Chas V\u2019shalom <\/em>!\u00a0 The\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0mode does not allow one to cook on\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>. \u00a0The\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>mode makes a modern oven\u00a0 <em>halachically <\/em>\u00a0compliant so that it may be used on\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0and <em>Yom Tov <\/em>.\u00a0 The purpose of the\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0Mode was to address new technological and computerized features that have created issues regarding oven use on\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0 <em>Yom Tov <\/em>.\u00a0 These features include the following:\u00a0 12 hour shut off; ringing and chiming at the end of the time bake cycle; inability to disable the oven light; the digital displays rendering the modern-day oven impossible to use on\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>, or to adjust the temperature for cooking on\u00a0 <em>Yom Tov <\/em>.\u00a0 The\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0Mode is an internal program that addresses and bypasses these issues, so that the oven can be used on\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0 <em>Yom Tov <\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>All laws of cooking and rewarming \u2013 <em>bishul <\/em>,\u00a0 <em>shehiya <\/em>, \u00a0and\u00a0 <em>chazara\u00a0 <\/em>\u2013 still apply to the oven equipped with a\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0mode. \u00a0Please note:\u00a0 Blanking and clearing of the control panel that allows for adjustment of the oven temperature on\u00a0 <em>Yom Tov <\/em>\u00a0 does NOT apply to\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0use.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Misconception 2 &#8211; Today, the kosher wine section in the liquor store carries Israeli wines produced from grapes grown in the\u00a0 <em>shmitta <\/em>\u00a0year bearing the following claim, \u201c <em>Otzar Bais Din <\/em>\u00a0wine \u2013 after the\u00a0 <em>shaas habiur <\/em>.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The wine appears to have reliable certification.\u00a0 I should have no problem drinking this wine.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Proceed with caution.\u00a0 There are many factors that need to be clarified:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Can one purchase\u00a0 <em>shmitta <\/em>\u00a0wine outside\u00a0 <em>Eretz Yisroe <\/em>l <em>, s <\/em>ince the wine is vested with <em>kedushas shiviis <\/em>, the sanctity of the Sabbatical year?<\/li>\n<li>Regardless of whether or not the wine can be purchased after the grape\/wine growing season has passed, and grapes are no longer found in the field, a\u00a0 <em>halachic <\/em>\u00a0process has to take place prior to one\u2019s partaking of the grapes.\u00a0 One has to take\u00a0 <em>shmitta <\/em>grapes\/wine,<a id=\"_ftnref1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0place them in a public domain and publicly declare in the presence of three people that these grapes are\u00a0 <em>hefker <\/em>, ownerless.\u00a0 This procedure of rescinding ownership of the grapes\/wine, after the grapes are \u00a0no longer found in the fields, is \u201ccommonly\u201d referred to as being\u00a0 <em>mafkir <\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0 <em>peiros l\u2019aachar shaas habiur <\/em>.\u00a0 The nullifier, or anyone else, can claim or reclaim ownership of the grapes\/wine, which would then be available for drinking.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>However, the wine is still vested with\u00a0 <em>kedushas sheviis <\/em>\u00a0and cannot be used for any non-sanctified purpose, such as extinguishing a\u00a0 <em>Havdala <\/em>\u00a0candle, pouring out the remaining\u00a0 <em>Kiddush <\/em>wine , or pouring out the wine for the ten\u00a0 <em>makos <\/em>\u00a0at the\u00a0 <em>Pesach seder <\/em>.\u00a0 The wine or produce has to be completely consumed.<br \/>\nRabbi Moshe Heinemann,\u00a0 <em>shlita <\/em>, Rabbinic Administrator of Star-K, is of the opinion that if one does not know if the\u00a0 <em>biur\u00a0 <\/em>procedure was performed properly, one would first have to rescind ownership of the wine in front of three people in a public domain.\u00a0 He would then be\u00a0 <em>mafkir <\/em>\u00a0the wine, reclaim it and drink the wine\u00a0 <em>b\u2019kedushas sheviis <\/em>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\" type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Misconception 3 &#8211; Cold food may be placed directly in a warming drawer on <em>Shabbos <\/em>, without a\u00a0 <em>blech <\/em>, regardless of the temperature of the warming drawer because it only keeps the food warm.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Not true.\u00a0 Since a warming\u00a0 drawer can warm food beyond\u00a0 <em>yad soledes bo <\/em>\u00a0(120oF), which constitutes\u00a0 <em>halachic <\/em>\u00a0cooking, it would be forbidden to use the warming drawer on\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>.\u00a0 This is due to the fact that a warming drawer is\u00a0 <em>halachically <\/em>\u00a0considered to be the same as an oven because it is thermostatically controlled. However, if the warming drawer could only warm the food below\u00a0 <em>yad soledes bo <\/em>\u00a0(120oF), it would be permitted for\u00a0 <em>Shabbos <\/em>\u00a0use.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\" type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Misconception 4 &#8211; Products labeled DE may be eaten only on\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dairy<\/span>\u00a0utensils, and products labeled ME may be eaten only on\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">meat<\/span>\u00a0utensils.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is an incorrect assumption. \u00a0DE means that a\u00a0 <em>pareve <\/em>\u00a0product was cooked using clean dairy equipment, and ME means that the\u00a0 <em>pareve <\/em>\u00a0product was cooked using clean meat equipment.\u00a0 \u00a0Since the product was cooked in a gender specific utensil, it cannot be eaten with the other gender; a DE product cannot be eaten with meat, and a ME product cannot be eaten with a dairy product.\u00a0 However, the restriction regarding the use of the other gender dishes or utensils only applies to using it while they are hot.\u00a0 Therefore,\u00a0<em>Pareve <\/em>\u00a0ices stating that they are DE may be scooped into meat dessert bowls and vice versa, and should not be washed together with the regular dirty meat dishes in hot water; however, spaghetti sauce stating that it is ME cannot be mixed with cheese.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\" type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>\u00a0Misconception 5 &#8211; Frozen fruits or vegetables bearing kosher certification are pre-checked for\u00a0 <em>toloyim <\/em>\u00a0and are halachically insect-free).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is not necessarily so. \u00a0Some certifications certify that the product does not require any further checking; other organizations may not address the issue, or their standards may be such that the product does not require inspection.\u00a0 This is a challenging problem for the kosher consumer, because different organizations maintain different standards and some certifications do not address the issue entirely.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\" type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Misconception 6 &#8211; An allergy disclaimer stating that the product is made in a facility or on equipment that is used for dairy products automatically makes the <em>pareve <\/em>\u00a0product\u00a0 <em>milchig <\/em>-dairy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>False. \u00a0Due to the severity of allergies \u2013 dairy, nut, gluten \u2013 companies are very careful to make disclosures to avoid any possible lawsuits.\u00a0 A company can pack a dry dairy chocolate covered peanut and have a complete wipe down after the product is packed; the label will still bear the disclaimer, \u201cProduced in a facility that manufactures milk products.\u201d\u00a0 When a product states that it is\u00a0 <em>pareve <\/em>, and the disclaimer appears, the equipment is 100%\u00a0 <em>pareve <\/em>\u00a0and there is no dairy contamination or intermingling with the\u00a0 <em>pareve <\/em>\u00a0product.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\" type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Misconception 7- All dairy products sold or produced in Israel are\u00a0 <em>Cholov Yisroel <\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is a very important misconception, because the Israeli Chief Rabbinate will permit the use of non- <em>cholov Yisroel <\/em>\u00a0powdered milk to be used as an ingredient.\u00a0 The product will state \u201c <em>avkat cholov nochri <\/em>\u201d \u2013 that non- <em>cholov Yisroel <\/em>\u00a0powdered milk is a permissible dairy\u00a0 ingredient.\u00a0 This is based on the\u00a0 <em>heter <\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0 <em>Rav\u00a0 <\/em>Tzvi Pesach Frank\u00a0 <em>zt\u201dl <\/em>, former\u00a0 <em>Rav <\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0 <em>Yerushalayim <\/em>, who maintained that the prohibition of\u00a0 <em>cholov akum\u00a0 <\/em>only applies to fluid milk and not powdered milk.\u00a0 This is not accepted as a\u00a0 <em>cholov Yisroel <\/em>\u00a0ingredient for those who are very strict adherents. \u00a0\u00a0But those who accept the\u00a0 <em>heter <\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0 <em>Rav\u00a0 <\/em>Tzvi Pesach Frank\u00a0 <em>zt\u201dl <\/em>\u00a0will consume \u201c <em>avkat cholov nochri. <\/em>\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0Bottom line:\u00a0 Read the labels carefully.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\" type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Misconception 8 &#8211; Stickers on kosher certified products make the product more kosher.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Depends.\u00a0 Sometimes a company makes a special production using alternative ingredients, leaving out ingredients, or making a product\u00a0 <em>bishul Yisroel <\/em>, and does not want to pay for special packaging.\u00a0 A sticker is a far more inexpensive special labeling method.\u00a0 Sometimes, the sticker is just a ploy to lead the consumer to believe that it is a special production; at times, a sticker is put on irrespective of the kosher certification on the product.\u00a0 \u00a0Consumers should be alerted to the fact that at times, manufacturers will overwrap a KFP product using the same year-round overwrap packaging.\u00a0 This issue has been dealt with at length in a\u00a0 <em>Kashrus Kurrents <\/em>\u00a0article entitled\u00a0 <em>Sticker Shock.\u00a0\u00a0 Caveat emptor <\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, in the ever changing world of kosher food certification, an educated kosher consumer is the best method to ensure that everything is\u00a0 <em>kosher v\u2019yosher <\/em>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"ftn1\"><a id=\"_ftn1\" title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">1<\/a>\u00a0Or any other\u00a0 <em>shmitta <\/em>\u00a0produce<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, Swiss, SunSans-Regular;
