{"id":419,"date":"2013-08-15T18:42:12","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T18:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/?p=419"},"modified":"2024-01-02T19:57:56","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T19:57:56","slug":"eruv-tavshilin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/articles\/seasonal\/419\/eruv-tavshilin\/","title":{"rendered":"Eruv Tavshilin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">A fundamental difference between <i>Yom Tov<\/i> observance and <i>Shabbos<\/i> observance is the allowance of <i>ochel nefesh<\/i>, food preparation on <i>Yom Tov<\/i>. &#8220;<i>Ach Asher Yei&#8217;achel L&#8217;Chol Nefesh Hu Levado Yei&#8217;aseh Lachem&#8230;<\/i>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> The <i>Torah<\/i> permits us to cook, bake, and prepare food on <i>Yom Tov<\/i> proper, in order to eat the prepared food on that day of <i>Yom Tov<\/i>. One is not permitted to prepare from one day of <i>Yom Tov<\/i> for the second day of <i>Yom Tov<\/i> or for after <i>Yom Tov<\/i>. This prohibition of <i>hachana<\/i>, of preparing from one day of <i>Yom Tov<\/i> to the next, presents a problem when the second day of <i>Yom Tov<\/i> falls out on <i>Shabbos<\/i> or when <i>Shabbos<\/i> follows a two day sequence of <i>Yomim Tovim<\/i>. Can one <i>halachically<\/i> prepare food on <i>Yom Tov<\/i> for the <i>Shabbos Yom Tov<\/i> or for <i>Shabbos<\/i>?<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular; font-size: small;\">To deal with this issue our Rabbis instituted a procedure known as <i>eruv tavshilin<\/i><sup><a href=\"#2\">2<\/a><\/sup>. An Eruv Tavshilin is prepared on Wednesday, if Yom Tov occurs on Thursday and Friday. It is prepared on Thursday, if the first day of Yom Tov is on Friday. The procedure is as follows. On <i>Erev Yom Tov&nbsp;<\/i>(Wednesday or Thursday), the head of the household, or his designee, should set aside a baked item such as bread or <i>matzoh<\/i>, <b>and<\/b> a cooked item such as meat, fish, or eggs (i.e. a food that is eaten along with bread). Each item should be at least the size of one <i>kezayis<\/i>, preferably the size of one <i>beitzah<\/i>. He or she should then recite the blessing of &#8220;<i>Baruch&#8230;Al Mitzvas Eruv<\/i>&#8221; and the proclamation, both found in the <i>Siddur<\/i>. This proclamation states that the cooked and baked items should permit us to continue baking, cooking, lighting a flame from an existing fire and do all the necessary preparations from <i>Yom Tov<\/i> proper to <i>Shabbos<\/i>.
