{"id":2121,"date":"2015-07-06T17:20:49","date_gmt":"2015-07-06T17:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/?p=2121"},"modified":"2022-01-11T20:05:54","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T20:05:54","slug":"security-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/kashrus-kurrents\/2121\/security-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Published Spring 2015<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In these turbulent times, many people have installed alarm systems in their homes which give them a sense of security.\u00a0\u00a0There are various types of burglar alarms which may or may not\u00a0be connected to a central system, and it is clear that the system will work only if all is intact, the component codes are set in the right sequence, and the unit is in working order.\u00a0\u00a0It is a good idea to test it every now and then to make sure the system is in proper operating condition.\u00a0\u00a0All it takes is one faulty connection to negate the whole system.<\/p>\n<p>Our feeling of security should come from the recognition that we have a protector in heaven, rather than relying entirely on some mechanical device devised by man.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<i>Ribbono<\/i><i>\u00a0Shel\u00a0Olam<\/i>\u00a0watches over our homes if we do His will. The\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0attached to our doorpost is our protection.\u00a0\u00a0It is a direct link to the &#8220;Central System&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0Certain letters are inscribed on the outside of this\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0which\u00a0say, among other things, that through this\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0the house is protected.\u00a0\u00a0However, the house is protected only if the\u00a0mezuzah &#8220;system&#8221; is intact &#8212; it is made according to the specifications under which it is intended to work.\u00a0\u00a0One slight crack in a letter may invalidate the whole protection system, in which case, the mezuzah\u00a0is completely useless and one has not fulfilled the\u00a0mitzvah, causing the\u00a0<i>bracha<\/i>\u00a0that one said when affixing the\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0to have been recited in vain.<\/p>\n<p>There are many things which can invalidate a\u00a0mezuzah, such as the \u2018<i>klaf<\/i>\u2019 (scroll) must be written on parchment which is specifically prepared for\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>.\u00a0\u00a0This parchment must be produced from the hide of a kosher animal.\u00a0\u00a0The parchment is then scored with an engraving instrument which makes grooves.\u00a0\u00a0The grooves must be made on the side of the parchment that was closest to the flesh of the animal.\u00a0\u00a0When the scribe writes the scroll, he must be careful to shape every letter in a specific manner with adequate spacing between the words.\u00a0One letter may not touch another, even slightly.\u00a0\u00a0If there is a deviation from the above specifications, the\u00a0mezuzah is not kosher.\u00a0\u00a0It may be repairable depending upon the nature of the problem, but if it is not repaired it will not fulfill its role as a mezuzah.\u00a0\u00a0It would be just like any other piece of paper on which words of the Torah\u00a0were written.\u00a0\u00a0These\u00a0mezuzah scrolls must be <i>halachically<\/i> checked every three or four years (twice in seven years) to make sure they are still kosher.<\/p>\n<p>Care should be taken that the parchment is rolled and not folded to avoid cracking letters, which would render the\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0<i>posul<\/i>, invalid.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0should be rolled from left to right, and the rolled parchment should preferably be wrapped in an initial protective plastic wrap covering to create a moisture barrier. The\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0should then be enclosed in a protective case of either plastic or metal.\u00a0\u00a0There is no special requirement regarding the material of the case.\u00a0\u00a0However, it would be best to avoid a tight-fitting\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0case where the\u00a0mezuzah scroll would need to be forced into the tube.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0should be affixed to the right doorpost of the entrance of the room in a slanted position, preferably at the bottom of the top third of the doorpost.\u00a0\u00a0Typically, the\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0is placed in the middle of the door&#8217;s width.\u00a0\u00a0If the doorpost is high, the\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0should be affixed at shoulder-height.\u00a0\u00a0If the doorpost is wide, it should be affixed within a\u00a0<i>tefach<\/i>,\u00a0handsbreadth, of the entrance.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0should slant towards the room one is entering.\u00a0\u00a0Nails, screws or permanent tape may be used to affix the\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0case to the doorpost.<\/p>\n<p>A kosher mezuzah, written in accordance with all the pertinent laws, is the first step in having a valid mezuzah. However, even after it was initially kosher, a mezuzah may, for various reasons, become non-kosher (e.g., ink may chip off the parchment).\u00a0\u00a0Sometimes ink spreads after the mezuzah\u00a0was written due to moisture in the air, causing the letters to touch one another.\u00a0\u00a0The engraved lines may disappear and cracks may form in the parchment and letters.\u00a0\u00a0Sometimes insects eat away at the parchment.<\/p>\n<p>Even though\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0are made primarily to serve the needs of those who desire to fulfill the\u00a0mitzvah<i>,<\/i>\u00a0the shocking truth is that many\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0are not and were never kosher.\u00a0\u00a0Printed\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0are intrinsically\u00a0unkosher, but are nonetheless easy to find.\u00a0\u00a0Parchment without properly engraved lines,\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0missing letters and words, cleverly printed\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0that look hand-written, and\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0with incomplete and deformed letters are also sold.\u00a0\u00a0It is unusual to find a small\u00a0<i>mezuzah<\/i>\u00a0(approximately three inches or less) which is kosher.<\/p>\n<p>Non-kosher\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0are so prevalent due to general unfamiliarity concerning some of the basic\u00a0<i>halachos<\/i>\u00a0surrounding this great\u00a0mitzvah.\u00a0\u00a0It is impossible to sell a new car, which is missing wheels, to a prospective buyer because everyone knows that a car cannot run without wheels.\u00a0\u00a0It is easy, however, to sell a non-kosher\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0with deformed letters to a customer because most people have no idea how the letters should be formed and will never find out if the\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0 &#8220;works&#8221; or not.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, some\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0are not kosher because of their kosher certification.\u00a0\u00a0It is common to find scrolls with the word &#8220;checked&#8221; (in Hebrew) stamped in ink or embossed onto the\u00a0mezuzah.\u00a0\u00a0This only serves to invalidate the\u00a0mezuzah\u00a0by adding more than the prescribed amount of letters<i>.<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0mezuzah may actually have been kosher without containing the kosher stamp.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If the extra letters are removed, this problem would be resolved, but how does the unsuspecting buyer know that these letters must be erased?\u00a0\u00a0Similar problems occur with <i>tefillin<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>What can be done to rectify the situation?\u00a0\u00a0Over the years, organizations such as\u00a0<i>Vaad Mishmeres\u00a0Stam<\/i>, and certain local communal organizations, have been vigilant in their attempts to educate the public about the need to purchase kosher\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0and discontinue the sale of the small\u00a0<i>posul<\/i><i>\u00a0mezuzos<\/i>.\u00a0\u00a0One should purchase\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i> directly from a reliable <i>yorei<\/i><i>\u00a0shomayim\u00a0sofer<\/i>\u00a0who has carefully checked and endorsed the\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0as kosher.\u00a0\u00a0Since even an experienced\u00a0<i>sofer<\/i>\u00a0takes a few hours to write a\u00a0mezuzah, one should not be surprised by the cost for such skilled labor.<\/p>\n<p>It is important that\u00a0<i>mezuzos<\/i>\u00a0be checked periodically to ensure that they are still kosher.\u00a0\u00a0We may then rest assured, with a secure feeling, that we are fulfilling our obligation and that our unique security system is in top working order.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/listings\/product\">For a list of STAR-K certified sofrim in Maryland, click here and enter SOFRIM in the category search box.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>For further information about mezuzah checking in your area and other in-depth publications about the mitzvah of mezuzah, contact Rabbi Greenfield at the Vaad Mishmeres Stam, 718-438-4980.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published Spring 2015<\/p>\n<p>In these turbulent times, many people have installed alarm systems in their homes which give them a sense of security.\u00a0\u00a0There are various types of burglar alarms which may or may not\u00a0be connected to a central system, and it is clear that the system will work only if all is intact, the component codes are set in the right sequence, and the unit is in working order.\u00a0\u00a0It is a good idea to test it every now and then to make sure the system is in proper operating condition.\u00a0\u00a0All it takes is one faulty connection to negate the whole system.<\/p>\n<p>Our feeling of security should come from the recognition that we have a protector in heaven, rather than relying entirely on some mechanical device devised by man.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<i>Ribbono<\/i><i>\u00a0Shel\u00a0Olam<\/i>\u00a0watches over our homes if we do His will.
