A kosher vegetable checking cloth is commonly referred to as a thrip cloth<\/em> or a shmatte bedika<\/em>. It is a fine mesh piece of fabric that allows users to check for insects in produce by trapping them in the cloth while allowing the water to drain out. See below for proper instructions in the use of a thrip cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Use a Thrip Cloth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Wash produce well. (Note: See specific instructions for broccoli <\/a>and cauliflower<\/a>.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Prepare a basin with water and a non-bleach and non-toxic dishwasher detergent solution. The water should feel slippery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Agitate the produce in the solution for 15 seconds. (Note: For broccoli and cauliflower, soak for 30 seconds BEFORE agitating.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Remove the produce from the basin and shake off excess water over the basin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Pour water through the thrip cloth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Check the thrip cloth over a light box for any insects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. If insects are found, repeat steps 1-6. This can be done up to three times<\/strong>. If insects are still found on the third try, the produce should not be used.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Check the water for infestation by placing a white basin over a light box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
