{"id":1200,"date":"2013-08-20T18:01:38","date_gmt":"2013-08-20T18:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/?p=1200"},"modified":"2018-12-05T15:30:43","modified_gmt":"2018-12-05T15:30:43","slug":"star-ks-third-annual-kashrus-training-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.star-k.org\/articles\/kashrus-kurrents\/1200\/star-ks-third-annual-kashrus-training-program\/","title":{"rendered":"2006 Kashrus Training Seminar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rabbi Chaim Moshe Levy, a <em>Mesivta rebbe <\/em>in Lakewood, New Jersey, knew it was coming, yet he still felt unprepared.\u00a0 In July, he received an overseas telephone call informing him that the time had come to take over the pulpit of his deceased father, Rabbi Daniel Levy, <em>zt\u201dl<\/em>, as the Rav of I.R.G. (<em>Khal Adas Yeshurun<\/em>) in Zurich, Switzerland.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Levy hoped to prepare himself for his new post by taking advantage of Star-K Certification\u2019s unique educational program later that month.\u00a0 \u201cI wanted to get some basic information about what is going on in the world of <em>kashrus<\/em>,\u201d explained Rabbi Levy.\u00a0 \u201cI also wanted to meet the various experts at Star-K, personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Levy was pleased with his decision to attend the Star-K seminar in Baltimore, Maryland.\u00a0 \u201cThe seminar was extremely informative, and the information was given over in a very organized manner,\u201d said Rabbi Levy.\u00a0 \u201cIt was wonderful and covered all aspects of the kosher world, from production on.\u00a0 It is an intense program, but you can pick up a lot of knowledge as well as tip-offs such as how to manage <em>mashgichim<\/em>, companies that are not in compliance, and other practical tips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Levy was just one of 26 participants, which included <em>rabbonim<\/em>, <em>kollel <\/em>fellows, and others serving in <em>klei kodesh <\/em>who have studied <em>Yorah Deah<\/em>.\u00a0 The intensive seminar featured lectures by Star-K\u2019s rabbinic staff members, including Rabbinic Administrator Rabbi Moshe Heinemann and President Dr. Avrom Pollak.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Heinemann spoke of the intricacies of <em>bishul akum <\/em>in his <em>shiur<\/em>, \u201c<em>Bishul Akum <\/em>and <em>Ne\u2019emanus <\/em>of an <em>Akum<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 Dr. Pollak discussed practical guidelines for setting up a local <em>vaad hakashrus <\/em>in his lecture, \u201cA Certifying Agency\u2019s Administrative Issues\u201d, and gave advice for the decisions one faces.<\/p>\n<p>Sessions covered various segments of the kashrus industry, including consumer inquiries and Sabbath mode appliances.\u00a0 They incorporated a Star-K produced audiovisual presentation of one of its <em>Cholov Yisroel <\/em>production facilities, as well as a hands-on practicum for vegetable checking.\u00a0 Field trips to a slaughterhouse, confectionery, restaurant, bakery, and the kosher kitchen of the Hyatt Regency rounded out the seminar experience.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Zvi Goldberg, coordinator of the seminar and Star-K <em>Kashrus <\/em>Administrator, attributes the success of this program to a mutual <em>zerizus<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cThe eagerness of the attendees to learn about <em>kashrus <\/em>was matched by the willingness of the Rabbis to give of their time and expertise.
